Berkshire / Re: Ralphs at Wantage Workhouse

Hello

Many thanks for your responses - much appreciated.

I dont know that they are brothers  - its just a theory I am trying to work on.  My GGF full name was William Francis Ralph born 1857/1858 in Berkshire.  The options in the records are few.

The 1871 census shows a Fracnis Ralph aged 14 and William Ralph aged 19 both from Wantage, Berkshire.  In 1881 Francis is in Portsea in the military and then after that he does not appear in any census.  My GGF moved to India in approx 1886 so this all fits in.  The only was to know for sure of course is to get a birth certificate but I was hoping if I could get the Workhouse records that this might help.

Berkshire / Ralphs at Wantage Workhouse

Hi There

Im actually from Berkshire but I live in Australia now.

I believe my 3x GGF William Francis Ralph (known as Francis)  born  approx 1857 was in Wantage Workhouse with his brother, also called William born 1853.  the first time I found them in the workhouse was 1971 when my GGF was 14.  My GGF left the workhouse and had a great life living abroad but sadly his brother lived out his days at the workhouse (this is assuming that my research thus far is all accurate).
I am trying to make sure that I have all the right information and also trying to trace their parents.  So, does anyone know if the workhouse records are available - it would be great to see when they went in and why?
Thanks in advance.

Hi
Thanks for that.  I think a stoke second class was a coal shoveler right and was the lowest rank on  board?
I think the last ships says Temeraire - is that right?  I have tried googling it but cant find a name like that around that period.
The last entry says that he served until 13 May 1919- I cant read what is says next to that - any ideas?
Thank you

Hi Guys

Im trying to find out information about my grans father for her.  I have manged to find a navt record but I cant really read it or understand what it means.  Can anyone help me? I would particularly be interested in what his position was etc, what his ships were, what countries he may have been in but any inform would be greatly appreciated many thanks.

I attach a copy of both. I think the second one with his photo is a copy of his Merchant Navy Record. Hope they are legible.  IS there anywhere else I can get some info on him from?

thanks in advance

Hi

Thanks for that.  Yes, I have seen that one but need to substantiate whether its the right one or not There are also a few other that it could be that I have seen in the census.

Thanks for your help though  :)

Hello

Yes, I have the Death Notice but the names arent given.  I also have her death notice and the parents names are given as Joseph and Carolina from Breslau, Germany.  I have trying to find something on that but I understand that German records are really bad so thought I might have better luck with Joseph as his death notice says he was born on Isle of Man. So if I can just confirm who his parents were i'll be able to move substantially forward I hope.

Thanks

Hello

I dont think there are any records for this period(?) but just in case I am missing something I am trying to find Jospeh Henry Quilliam b 1852 who was born Isle of Man and emigrated to South Acrica.  He was there by 1886 which is when he got married.

Thank you.

Europe / Breslau - no idea where to start!
« on: Thursday 03 September 09 17:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello There

I am tracing back my relatives in South Africa and have found that they originated from Breslau, Germany but I see that it is now part of Poland.  When searching I am not sure whether I should be looking in German or Polish archives and databases?

In case anyone who can point me in the right direction I am looking for Marie Langer (although I have also see one document where it refers to her as Langen) born c 1859.  Her parents were Jospeh and Carolina.  I know they were in South Africa by 1886 as that is when she got married.

If anyone can point me in the right direction i'd be really grateful.

Thank you.

Michelle
