Roscommon / Re: Rathoroghan or Bellgrove?
« on: Thursday 13 October 11 19:06 BST (UK)  »
Heywood,
It is the family that moved to Measham. My gr, gr grandad was Andrew Dugan and his parents were Michael and Catherine. Since the thread that Shane has refered to, we have discovered that Catherine's maiden name is Reagan, Regan, Ragin (depending on which of the 2 birth certs of the 2 children born in England you look at and how you interpret it). Also, a distant member of the family says his dad told his brother-in-law that his dad was from Moy. There is a Moy around the Antrim area and also a River Moy around the Roscommon/ Mayo area. I have been in touch with the place that has the records in Armagh that have records for Moy and Portadown and they have no records for Michael and Catherine. We have found baptismal records in County Wicklow, Rathdrum for ANdrew and Avoca for Catherine. But with the Rothoroghan find, I wandered if that may be more likely.  In 1861 and 1871 (I think, off hand), on the census it says they are from Bottradon, and on another census later on, Rottradon. On the 1911 census, Andrew is down as being from County Mayo. ANdrew married a woman whos mother was from Galway. We have found 2 baptismal records for a Michaelem Diggin and a Catharina Regan in Roscommon, Michael in Killukin, Roscommon and Catherine in Boyle, Roscommon. On an old map of Roscommon, I found the place Rathoroghan and thought it may well be Bottradon or Rottradon. Bellgrove is the nearest that have found for Dareygrove where Catherine is supposed to be from (again doesn't exist).
The Killa Maver rings a bell but I can't remember why.
I appreciate that Portadown has been mentioned, but having contacted someone in Armagh who has looked for me with no success, I am exploring other options.

Hi Gardener,
many thanks for your response. We have been in touch with someone (finally) in Measham and don't think our ancestor is buried in Measham. SOmeone is looking for burials in Ashby for us and fingers crossed we may have some results. Thanks again,

Roscommon / Rathoroghan or Bellgrove?
« on: Wednesday 12 October 11 19:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I have found some baptismal records for my gr gr gr grandparents in Roscommon (Killukin and Boyle). However on the census returns in England in the 1860s, 1870s, 1880s, they say that they are from Bottradon or Rottradon and Dareybrode. Having found an old map of Roscommon and looked very closely at it, I have found a Rathoroghan and Bellgrove. These are the nearest that I can find and maybe if said in a thick Irish accent, might these be the places that we have been looking for so long? If they are not the places, have any suggestions as to what they might be?
Many thanks,

Wicklow / Re: Ragin or Reagan / Dugan
« on: Thursday 29 September 11 08:49 BST (UK)  »
On the 1861 census it says he was born in bottradon (doesn't exist). On Irish roots a distant cousin found a Michael Dugan baptised in Wicklow in feb 1819, same year of birth. Might be same person, might not. Have also been in contact with a library of records in Aarmagh. They hold records for portadown, moy (another lead from distant cousin) and blackwatertown ( suggested by library in Aarmagh). Because we have had no luck in Aarmagh, we thought we'd explore this one. Hope this helps,

Wicklow / Ragin or Reagan / Dugan
« on: Wednesday 28 September 11 21:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
having looked back as best I can into my family history in Ireland, I may have found a baptism record for my gr gr grandfather - Michael Dugan. It is from Coolboy, Carnew, WIcklow, 28 Feb 1819, Roman Catholic faith, father Michael and mother Ann Kennedy. Where are these records kept - Dublin possibly? I would also like to find any possible information about his wife, Catherine Ragin or Reagan. We have DofB ranging from 1812 to 1814. We believe they married in Ireland where they had 2 boys, Michael and Andrew, before they moved to England. Where should I look to find any information?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks,

Derbyshire / Catholic burials
« on: Wednesday 28 September 11 21:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi,  looked into my family history and thinking I have a death record for my gr gr grandmother, who came from Ireland, I am trying to find out where she would be buried. She died in Measham in 1870, as a Roman Catholic. Unfortunately at that time, there was no catholic church in Measham. Is there a RC section of a graveyard in Measham or would the family have had to take the body further afield to find a RC place of rest? She was Catherine Dugan, died first quarter of 1870.
Any help would be greatly appreciated in finding this plot as I have done lots of detective work and found the grave of one of her sons in Yorkshire in the 1910s.
Thanks,

Ireland / Re: Raven / Dugan
« on: Monday 19 September 11 21:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi.
1861 census, for Measham, reg. district - Ashby-de-la-zouch
Ed, institution or vessel - 8
Household schedule number - 50
Piece - 2267
Folio - 86
Page number 9

I have spoken to someone else who is on with this with me and Raven may possibly be Reagan or Ragin, as the 1851 census has them as Dudan, not Dugan (too many similarities with children, names and DofBs) and having cousins living with them named Ragin - Reagan.
Hope this helps,

Ireland / Raven / Dugan
« on: Monday 19 September 11 18:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
as with lots of Irish family history searches, I have hit a wall. In the 1810s, Michael Dugan (or Dougan, Dhugan, Doogan amongst other variants I have found) and his wife Catherine, maiden name Raven were born. On census returns in ENgland, they say they were born in Bottradon and Dareybrode respectively. Of course, neither of these exist. COuld it be Portadown? We thought from passed on messages through the family it might be Moy and also County Mayo as their son said in the 1911 census.
Can anyone offer any suggestions as to where they may have come from or indeed any marriage lines?
ANy assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Travlet

Derbyshire / Re: Records for Measham 1851-1854

Hi Trish,
thanks for your replies. I amdescended from Andrew, son of Michael and Catherine. We know about him and have just found his unmarked grave in Wakefield, west yorkshire. The deaths you have found for Michael and Catherine are interesting. At first I dismissed them because of their rough birth years but people were not always that honest in census returns from years ago were they? But then I thought they may fit with not being able to find them both on the 1871 census, but with there being a Michael living with possibly son Michael (even though it does not state relationship to head of house) and him being widowed, it might fit and same occupation too! I looked at that census last week but discounted it due to father Michael's age, but if death records are correct, who knows, possibly! They also live in the same road that they did in 1861.
You may well have solved a mystery for us and have given us lots to think about.
You're a gem!
Thanks again,
Travlet
