Thanks for this information....much appreciated. I found an "Ordinance Survey of the County of Londonderry" covering 18th and 19th centuries. Over that period it mentions quite a few Currys and in the early 1800s the Mayor of Londonderry is John Currie and Chamberlain is Joseph Curry. It may be coincedence but in 2018 Joseph is referred to as the "late" Joseph Curry so must have died 2018 and reference made to his heirs. I wondered if he could have been the Joseph Curry that I am researching as there were another couple of things which supported that theory and the dates tally. I would be really grateful for any further info on the Currys as if nothing else would be interesting to find out any Irish/Scottish link....especially with Argyll. I think I found a John Charley Curry memorial in ?Glendermott.

I have found a couple of John Currys in Londonderry....one being John Charley Curry who died in 1867. I have seen this name before. I have also noticed a few Curry/Curries  in Antrim. I find the geography a bit confusing but would be pleased to hear of your Curry links. Im always hoping I will get a wee breakthrough somewhere.

I have very little to go on. Joseph Curry was the oldest son of John Curry...farmer...parish of Glendermott.Joseph graduated from Glasgow University 1817 and died age 21 in Argyll Scotland 1818. I am wondering if the early family had come from Argyll at the time of Plantation. I am Scottish myself and some of my Currie forebears came from the area where Joseph died. I have looked up a few Curry Wills but the dates dont tally.

Derry (Londonderry) / Curry link to Lochgair Scotland
« on: Saturday 12 October 19 01:04 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a link between Joseph Curry from Derry and a memorial marking his death in 1818 in the village of Lochgair, Argyll, Scotland.Joseph was 21 and had completed his studies at Glasgow University but came from ?Glendermott. His father ?John was a farmer. The memorial was erected by his fellow students. There were a number of Curries in Lochgair...was there a possible family connection?
I would appreciate any links/information.

Good to hear from you. I will be as brief as possible with my Currie information!
Parents of John Curry were ?Curry and Catherine MacDougall(Morar).
They had 3 sons:
 Peter(Gallanach), m Catherine Curry.
Ronald (Lochgair) m Sarah Clark.
John(Balliemore Aird). b 1770 m Mary McAlpine (Uila)
                                                            ###
John and Mary had ?6 children
Isabel  (b1793.Uila)
Margaret (b 1795 Uila -d1860 Middlesex Ont. m Niel Galbraith, had son Niel Galbraith)
Donald (b1799 Uila-d ?1867. Dunwich later Saugheen Bruce Co Ont m   Euphemia McCallum. ?14 children.)
Jean (b1802)
Elizabeth (b1807-d1894?Dunwich Ont.m Benjamin Gunn.)
Niel (b1809-d? Glassary  m Isabella McEwan. Lived at Carrick. Had Mary, John,Archibald,Ronald,(my g.grandfather),Isabella, Catherine.)
                                                        ####
It appeas that Margaret,Donald and Elizabeth emigrated to Dunwich Ont and I beleive their elderly parents John and Mary did too.
My family line comes from Niel (m Isabella mcEwan). His son Ronald was my g.grandfather born at Carrick.
                                                        ####

The place names mentioned are now deserted settlements.
Uila (Uillian) an ancient community situated behind Bridgend in present day Kilmichael-Glassary.
Gallanach around where Lochgair village is today Carrick is near Port Ann, and I believe Balliemore Aird to be near Castleon Estate Lochgilphead, although I think there were two Balliemores.
I do not have any evidence of occupations, but safe to say most would have been involved with agriculture and or fishing.
I am currently researching where this branch of the Curries  came from originally. The spelling of the name is  "Curry" up until Niel had his family then became "Currie".

I was unaware that I had  forebears who emigrated to Canada, so am looking forward to learning  a bit more.I figure that Donalds children  and my g.grandfather Ronald would have been cousins..am I right??.....Ila

Angus, thank you for you`r reply re Currie research.I am just in the very early stages, and at the  moment concentrating on researching immediate family. Curries(Currys) appear to have lived  in  the mid Argyll area. Old settlements such  Uila,(perhaps around the present day Bridgend area of Kilmichael Glassary), Gallanach,Balliemore Aird and Carrick are mentioned together with Lochgair. The earliest information that I have is Peter Curry, married to Christian Thomson (Uila). No dates given but they had a daughter born 1771 who married Peter Curry (Gallanach),  one of four children of ?Curry who married Catherine MacDougall(Morar). Another of their children, John,(Balliemore) married Mary McAlpine(?Uila) and it is from that branch that I am descended. It appears that a number of John and Mary`s family emigrated to Ontario probably in the early 1800s.They had a son Neil, born 1809 who remained in Scotland and married Isabella McEwan. They lived at Carrick where my g.grandfather Ronald Currie was born.It has always been something of a mystery as to where the "Curries" came from originally as you can see way back a Currie married a Currie. There are many Curries on the island of Islay and also the Island of Bute, but as far as I am aware, I am not related to them. There are also many Curries in Ireland. One little twist which my late father had discovered was a memorial at Lochgair to a Joseph Curry who "perished" there aged 21 in 1818. He had been a student at Glasgow University and came from Derry in Ireland. The memorial was erected by his fellow students which suggests perhaps he died very suddenly but also was not resident to the  area. I am the last Currie from my particular branch, which makes me very  interested to see if I can uncover any more about the family origins.....Ila
