Shropshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 census look up - BAUGH
« on: Wednesday 19 October 11 14:51 BST (UK)  »
wow thanks for such a great reply!

Yes I have quite a bit of information about John Ellis Baugh as he is my direct ancestor and my connection to the Baughs.  In fact he is my gg grandfather.  These are my notes on him on my tree: however I cant copy and paste them and dont have an option to attach them for some reason.  PM me and I can send them separately by email.  Theres too much to type in all over again.

He had two surviving children, the daughter Edith Emily is my g grandmother on my mothers side and the family comes from Prescot although mum lives in Derbyshire.  How are you connected?  Is it via the Beriah Baugh that you were looking for all those years ago?

I am interested about the two infants you mention buried in the churchyard.  I know there was a child died about the same time as Rhoda also named John Ellis Baugh - tragically died of TB of the stomach - commonly caught from drinking unpasturised cows milk.  I guess as his mother was so ill at the time she couldn't feed the baby herself.  She died of TB two weeks after the baby was born who also died at two months old.  JEB saw a lot of tragedy in his life, personal life and life as a miner.  There was a big mining accident in Pelsall colliery about the time they were living there, and mining accidents werent uncommon then anyway.  I dont know about the other infant.  Although my mother recalls being told that JEB and Rhoda had several children that didnt survive, however we dont know any more than that passed down through the family.

Yes I have seen the film on youtube about Dark Lane, absolutely fascinating.  I also ordered a book called Dark Lane the forgotten village, theres a rootschat thread about it.

Look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes
Rachel

sorry this is a rather belated reply several years later! I came upon this randomly when looking for something else!   However it looks like the same Baughs are in my family tree.   Elizabeth Baugh (nee Griffiths)  b High Ercall in the 1851 census:

1851 census Dark Lane Row Dawley
Elizabeth Baugh head wid 49 b High Ercall.  Sarah Baugh dau 22 furnace work (coal) b Stirchley ..Beriah Baugh son 20 collier b Dawley.  ELizabeth Baugh dau 15 stone mining b Dawley.

Is my gggg grandmother.

She was married to William Baugh and had as far as I know 6 children the eldest being Richard Baugh b abt 1822 There was a younger son Beriah b abt 1830, which is the one you were tracing.  I think their marriage may be the following:

extract from parish registers - Stemmata Botevilliana - 1821 May 7 marriage of William Baugh and Elizabeth Griffiths.

Richard Baugh married Sarah Smart on 14 July 1844 and had one son John Ellis Baugh my gg grandfather.  I think both Richard and Sarah died before the 1851 census as they have proved untraceable  - I know that John Ellis Baugh lived with uncle and then grandmother when young.  He is living with Sarah Baugh (nee Griffiths) in 1861 in Dark Lane aged 12.

I have only recently identified the Sarah Baugh in the 1851 census above as the correct mother of Richard, the 1861 census helped to prove that, I have had to be careful as there were two Richard and Sarah Baughs of about a similar age living in the same area, same occupation!  (The other Sarah's maiden name was Blackmore) This second Richard and Sarah are the ones in the 1851 census:

Colliers Row Dawley parish Malins Lee
Richard Baugh head 33 collier b Dawley.  Sarah Baugh wife 31 b Dawley. Enoch Baugh son 10 collier b Dawley Beriah Baugh son collier 8 b Dawley Ann Baugh dau 1 b Dawley.

Its easy to mix the families up and get totally confused due to the similar names and my Richard and Sarah disappearing off the face of the earth!  It took quite a while to untangle it all.

This family may well be connected as Beriah keeps cropping up!!  However I dont know how as yet.  As you have found out there are loads of Baughs in this small area, I havent yet found a definite connection with others.

I unfortunately know nothing of Beriah except what I have found in the census returns.  However it is exciting to find a connection 'out there' as I have not found anything before.

If this reaches you I would love to get in touch and share further.
Best wishes
Rachel

Derbyshire / Re: Lead Miners migration to Wales c1700
« on: Tuesday 04 October 11 13:38 BST (UK)  »
I am interested in a migration the other way round!  My grandfathers grandmother came from the Evans family in Youlgreave, needless to say they were all employed as lead miners and it was said that they orginated from Wales, hence my grandfathers sandy hair.  How true the welsh connection is who knows, but I would be interested to find out more.

People did move around to find work, and this is especially true in the mining communities, so migration either way is not surprising I guess, but I would love to find out more if anyone out there has more information on it.

They are not part of my immediate tree, I have seen these on the Stemmata Botevilliana, which has a Baugh ancestry in it.  Have you seen this?  I suspect you may have as it is the best source I know of Baugh parish records at this time and has your names in it.  This was compiled or started or something by a Beriah Botfield in times gone by.

Thanks anyway.

Theres probably a connection I expect as I have a Beriah Baugh on my tree also.  B abt 1830 younger brother of Richard.  I have a William Baugh but he is b abt 1829.  I dont know the connection though.

When were your Beriahs born and who were their parents?  I would be interested to know.  I have found other Beriah Baughs on the census returns but so far unable to connect up.  Theres another Richard and Sarah which look the same as mine but are not, and they have a young son Beriah.

Its a problem when they died young and therefore missed being on the census returns, at at least the later ones.  You then get left with gaps you cant fill very easily.

Thanks for that pointer.  I had a look on IGI but Malinslee is not there unfortunately, the only one relevant is Dawley Magna.  There are alot of Baughs but not mine!

My John Ellis Baugh was born in Dark Lane 1848 to parents Richard Baugh (d 1849) and Sarah Smart m 1844 Richard's father was a William Baugh and his mother probably was Elizabeth b High Ercall (1802) if my detective work in census returns is correct.  I would love to trace their marriage but have been unable to do so.  I dont think it would be registered as Malinslee as Malinslee wasn't registered as a separate chapel until 1843 although it was built in 1805, but you never know!

Thanks anyone all of you for your thoughts and ideas on the Baughs.

Ireland / Meade - Michael Meade Liverpool
« on: Monday 23 May 11 10:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I am trying to trace an ancestor and his family.  His name is Michael Meade and he was born in Ireland c 1796, family knowledge says County Mayo.  He married an Ann Upton and they had a son in Preston Lancs c 1928.  I found out from his death certificate that he  was a Chelsea Pensioner, and have tracked down a Chelsea Pensioner record on Findmypast that fits his details.

The only thing is that this one was from village of Whitechurch, Waterford and signed up in Cork, not from Mayo, but its the only one where all other details, eg age date of discharge etc fit.  This explains why he left Ireland when he did, he signed up to the British Army in 1819.  I have him newly discharged with wife in 1841 census and by 1851 they were living in Prescot, near Liverpool, with Ann Uptons father.

Does anyone know if it is possible to find out more about his Irish background?  I know its a long shot as it is so early, but I would love to find out where he actually came from.

I would also like to find a marriage record for Michael and Ann, its too early for civil registration and IGI does not have any Huyton or Preston records to look in.  Also some kind of baptism record for their son John.  Michael was catholic, although Ann seems to be from English protestant background, I guess that the marriage was catholic and so was sons baptism.  Mum remembers it being told that her grandmother married a catholic by the surname of Meade (John). (But thats another long tale in itself!!)

Any help really appreciated as after the miraculous breakthrough of the CP records I am really stuck!  :(

Shropshire / Re: Dark Lane the Forgotten Village

Hi
regarding the book - Dark Lane the forgotten village, I decided to get a copy as my mothers mothers family come from there.

If anyone is interested Amazon no longer stock the book but the Wellington News do, £11.99 + £2 postage if you can't call in person like me.  I emailed the editor, which is on the newspaper website and got a quick reply.  Looking forward to reading the book and seeing the pictures.

I have always wanted to find out more about this area.  My branch of the family were Baughs, but they moved to Lancashire in the late 1800s to find work in the Wigan and then St Helens coal mines.  Dark Lane sounded like a rather dark brooding place overshadowed by pit buildings and black with coal dust, but it looks rather more rural than that, the coal dust bit may well be true of course!   Its hard to say what it looked like in the Victorian times of course when the pit buildings were still standing.
