Hi Alex,

My email is vickki_elliott@bigpond.com

I am not a Russell, I was a Gordon prior to marriage - Mary Russell (via her marriage to John Thomas Gordon) is my GG Grandmother.  So it's only really George Russell & Mary/Marian Caddens that are relevant for me...

Thanks so much

P.S.  have you gone any further back than George Russell & Mary(Marian) Caddens?  Do you have their marriage date/place? Thanks so much, Vickki

Hi Alex,

I haven't looked at this for quite some time.  However, Mary Russell married John Thomas Gordon on 25 December 1871 - they were married in 'the dwelling house of Mrs J Wallis' in Auckland.  I didn't obtain her death certificate - but have a record of (who I think is her) burial record  that states Mary Gordon was 82 years old when she died on 19 November 1924 and is buried in Purewa Cemetery.

I couldn't find anything on when she left Scotland - name of ship, port etc - or when she arrived in NZ.

If you find anything further, I'd appreciate you sharing.

Best of luck

Hello - I've not gone any further with this… Life got in the way!  Would be interested to hear where you are at and your link to Robert Duncan.

Thanks so much.

Thanks for the extra info. The photos you referred to didn't appear in the post.  Perhaps I'm not doing something right? ??? Very sad about his son Harold...  Are you sure he was born in Brisbane?  All the records I hold show his parents as being Thomas St Clair and Violet Thurman and that he was born in Wimbledon, Surrey, England...He is a curious man to track.

Thanks so much.

Hello,

Thank you for the photos, they're great.  I have photos of him as a young man but nothing later.  What year were the photos taken?

If you have more information that would be fantastic.  I have been trying to trace him back to the UK - his birth certificate but have been able to find nothing.  Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks so much

Christian Percy married Amy Gertrude Parkman Scruse (she was previously married and though she says widow on the marr. cert she was actually divorced from her first husband) on 25 August 1908.

And yes on the marr. cert. Christian Percy's birth place is listed as Wimbleton (sic), Surrey, England and parents as Thomas St Clair and Violet Thurman with Thomas being a Crockery Merchant.

On his death cert. details are the same although his father is listed as Thomas Percy St Clair.  Also interesting that the death was reported by his second wife - Ethel Maria Dinning - and they were only married for under two years at the time of his death.  I'm assuming Ethel provided the info for the death cert. and that she also knew his parents to be Thomas St Clair and Violet Thurman.

And on eldest son's (Leslie Herbert) birth cert. Christian Percy's birthplace is listed as London, Surrey, England.

What a tangled web... ???

I don't know for sure what religion Mary was.  However, her son George Martin Gordon was Presbyterian.

Thanks for your help.

Mary married in NZ in 1871.  Her death cert states she was in NZ for 60 years which would mean she emigrated in approx. 1864.
