Sussex / Sussex 1670 Hearth Tax
« on: Tuesday 21 April 09 18:49 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know where to locate the 1670 Hearth Tax records for Sussex?  I understand it is the next best thing as a substitute for a sort of census for that year and reveals the names of the head of the household.  Has this been transcribed?  Is someone working on it?  Does some library hold the original?  How do I get my hands on this gem?

Thanks,
  Terri (woman_hollering)

Sussex / Are there any BRIGMANs currently in Sussex?
« on: Sunday 15 March 09 04:22 GMT (UK)  »
My research seems to indicate that my BRIGMAN/BRIGGMAN ancestors who lived in Mayfield and Rotherfield in the 1500s and 1600s seemed to have died out and none are currently left.  Of course, I've looked at the early census records in the 1800s and there are 4 listings in 1841, but I can not find a single record on them in the 1700s in the Mayfield area.  There are a few Brigmans on parish registers in the early 1700s in Alfriston, but that is all.

My question is this:  is there anyone local to the area that is reading this and knows of a BRIGMAN family still in Sussex (particularly East Sussex)?  I would dearly love to make contact with one and pass on some interesting facts about the family and the vast extent to which the name has spread throughout the US from just a single immigrant.  Did some go to Australia?  Where are my people?

Thanks, Terri

Hi, Chris:

Oh, yes, I know of whom you refer.  It's a bit of a jumble because I strongly suspect that stonemason Bridgman originally spelled his name Brigman or Briggman (or, at least his forebears did).  Could you just look at the period prior to 1725 for Brigman or Briggman?  That should do me.

Thanks,
  Terri

Chris:

Could you check to see if there are any Brigman/Briggman/Bridg(e)man surnames???  I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks,

Kerry.....thank you so much!  You are a real sweetie!  Could you please tell me the details of the mini CD on PRs that you mentioned?  So I can be sure to have the full reference/source on this data?  I'm so happy...you made my day!  Thanks, Terri in Texas (Hollering.Woman)

Sussex / BRIGGMAN in Mayfield/Warbleton 1600s
« on: Wednesday 18 February 09 06:14 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for any information on BRIGGMAN or BRIGMAN in the Mayfield, Rotherfield, Warbleton, or Alfriston areas between approximately 1575-1700.  They were poor undertenants/cottars and maybe weavers.  At least a couple of them were outlaws (one was transported).  They married into the Moone, Latter, and Gilford families.

Any tidbit is graciously appreciated and, of course, I'm happy to share!!
