Suffolk / Re: Looking for obituary
« on: Sunday 23 March 25 09:13 GMT (UK)  »
As he was living in Leiston I'm wondering if he was working on the construction of Sizewell nuclear power station, the first of which - Sizewell A -  was commenced in the 1960s.  I know a lot of people were attracted to the area at that time because of the variety of jobs available.

Armed Forces / Armed Forces deaths post WW2
« on: Sunday 12 January 25 21:09 GMT (UK)  »
My friend and I have been researching the WW1 & WW2 deaths for my village, both those listed on the war memorial as well as those which have been omitted.  As a follow-on to this we are now thinking of the post WW2 conflicts and wondering where we could find records of the fallen in such conflicts as Korea, Malaya, Kenya, Aden, Cyprus, Falklands etc.  We'd appreciate any suggestions as to where we should be searching.

Many thanks in advance

Suffolk / Re: parents of Mary Grimwood (abt 1767- 1834)

I have a rich seam of Grimwoods in my tree from the Thorpe Morieux, Hitcham & Brettenham areas.  My great-grandmother Emily Grimwood (born Brettenham 1848) was the second wife of Robert Pearl (born 1834, Hitcham).

Good evening all & a big hello to Heather - nice to be in contact again!

A few scraps I have gleaned so far (with help from Heather, Erato, Wayne's input):

1.  ..................................................

2.  ...........................most of the time

3.  ............................did not do this

4.  & observe the .............................

5.  ..................................................

6.  All/Acc ??

7.  Mr Ora Haley called and upon (oath?)

8.  testified

9.  Possibly reference to Ann Bassett in longhand in brackets?

10.  Mr Haley, where do you live?  I am living in Denver at present.

11.  Are you .........................................

12.  arrived the month of March 1911 ................

13.  ..............................................................

In addition to the above - a question for the shorthand writers:  There is an outline at the end of lines 5, 9, 10, 11, 13 which looks to me like 'this year' but doesn't seem right in the context.  Any suggestions.  I was thinking of something affirmative like 'sure'.

Feel free to fill in any gaps whilst I continue to scratch my head & search for clues/inspiration.

Happy transcribing,

GS   :)

Hi Paul - just seen your post.  Heather & I have worked on here on Pitman transcriptions in the past.   I'll have a better look tomorrow & if she & I can confirm it's Pitman shorthand we might well be able to help.  As Pitman is phonetic it helps to have as much background to the document as possible.

Corporal, Royal Garrison Artillery, I think.

The Royal Garrison Artillery was part of the British Army's Royal Regiment of Artillery serving alongside the Royal Field Artillery & the Royal Horse Artillery.

Welcome to RC glasscrystal.

I agree with Heather that it's Pitman shorthand but it's always difficult to decipher short pieces like this taken out of context.

As the writer hasn't used vowels on the first outline I'm assuming it's a shortform and that outline would thus stand for either 'member' or 'number'.  As far as the final outline is concerned, I agree with  Heather that it is possibly 'recognised'.  Another possibility is 'recommenced'.  I think the chances are that the second outline, as already suggested, is 'not'. So it's a matter of shuffling that lot around to see if you can get something to make sense!  As I said, it's difficult when short pieces like this are out of context.
Kind regards - and a 'Nice to see you again' to Heather!

Suffolk / Re: Suffolk parish registers to go online?
« on: Sunday 07 July 24 18:53 BST (UK)  »
I do a lot of transcription work for various bodies so I do have experience of the timeframes involved.  Shame Ancestry farms out its transcription work to India; there are plenty of resources for this kind of work in the UK & US I'm sure.

One of my favourite projects was Shakespeare's World, a collaboration between the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC, Oxford University & the OED.  Between 2015 and 2019 we transcribed thousands of documents from Shakespeare's time.  Wonderful stuff.  Nothing like selecting the next document to transcribe & find an image of an original letter written by Ben Johnson! Other interesting projects were transcribing the letters & diaries of the officers and men who fought at Waterloo, and the documents of the original Greenwich Naval Hospital. I'm currently working on a project transcribing the documents & notes of surveyors mapping the Great Lakes in the late 18th/early 19th centuries.
