Wow, Jonwarrn, that is some heavy duty sleuthing. Yep, right person, and her brother as well. Thanks.

Sussex / Children of Albion Hill area, Brighton, 1920s
« on: Tuesday 29 July 25 10:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I have been restoring this wonderful old photograph of my grandmother with lots of children in the Albion Hill area of Brighton, taken in the very early 1920s, and thought it was worth sharing here in case anyone had young relatives from that area at the same time. They may well be in this picture.

My nan (front row, third from the right) lived in Liverpool Street, so it is possible this picture was taken there. She was born in 1914, and I am guessing she looks about 7 or 8 at this time, so 1921-22 is a rough date. I have no idea of any names of the other children.

I think it is also fascinating as a glimpse into what kids in the back streets of Brighton were wearing at the time. A number of the boys are wearing ties, some with waistcoats, and there's even a little chap with a bow tie on. No scruffy street urchins here!

Colours may be a bit fanciful but it is lovely to see their faces smiling out from a century ago.

Original image for comparison.

Wow, so quick!

Many, many thanks Joger, that is brilliant.

I was mildly impressed with the auto transcription website, but it yet again shows the limits and risks of relying on these types of machine learning tools. I tried to get Copilot to transcribe the same, and it made up almost everything and presented it as fact.

I have been looking at Louis-Josephs family, and Polynice Joseph Janvier was his younger brother, so another name to add to the tree.

I am intrigued by the story of Louis-Joseph and especially his wife Jane. She came from the backstreets of Brighton, met and married the Haitian ambassador and dined at venues in the presence of Queen Victoria.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Death record in French, Haiti 1908
« on: Tuesday 08 July 25 09:07 BST (UK)  »
Good morning,

I wonder if anyone with a good knowledge of French and elaborate handwriting may be able to help me.

I have a death notice for an ancestor of mine who married the Haitian writer, politician and ambassador Louis-Joseph Janvier, and who died in Haiti in 1908.

I have used an automatic online transcriber which seems to me with my limited pre- O'level French to have done a rather good job of transcribing the text, and then used Google translate to get it into English, but there are a few words I am doubting the accuracy of. My old eyes cannot see the same as the transcription in the original, and although I doubt that any of them change the meaning of the whole text it would be nice to have an accurate transcription and translation so that the records are straight in my tree. And if anyone can verify the rest, just to ensure the transcriber did a good job, that would be great.

Attached is a copy of the original, and my attempt to highlight the words I am questioning.

Any help would be most gratefully received

Hello,

I am needing some help with the Isle of Wight County Press archives am I able to get a copy of a couple of pages.

I am after page 38 of August 24 1984 or page 36 of June 25 1977.

Either of these pages may contain information which could aid a line of research which has been going on for many years.

Many thanks

Australia / Migration Case Files
« on: Wednesday 20 April 16 23:10 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I have come across an image of an Australian government document (from the transcribe.naa.gov.au website) which contains the name of a person I have been looking for for a long time. The document is headed "TRANSFER PROPOSAL PART 2 CONSIGNMENT LIST" and is just a list of names, box numbers and item codes. The document is listed under Migration Case Files (Kuala Lumpur) Department of Immigration 1987-1988.

Does anyone know if this means that the person named was applying to migrate to Australia in that time period, or was this to dispose of old documents? Also, what if any, other information could be gleamed from such a document to find out any more about anyone listed. The last record I have found for this person was in the 1960s so it would be great to move them on a couple of decades.

I cannot name them because there is a possibility, however slight, that they are still alive.

Many thanks

Glen

Derbyshire / Re: Any info on Edith Sitwell's butler, John Robins
« on: Wednesday 02 March 16 06:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Chris,

To say I am interested would be a massive understatement!

Firstly, my sincere condolences for the loss of your mother. Secondly, welcome to Rootschat.

My great-grandfather was William Henry Robins, born in 1895, and was the son of Samuel William Robins and Louisa Duly. There seem to have been 11 children starting with Alice in 1885 through to Annie in 1906, of whom I have info on all but 2 of them. I have found no information on brother James Richard Robins after WW1 when he was reported as Awol. Let me know what info you need.

My father says that his grandfather William was cantankerous, but I do remind him that he only knew him after a long life, and knew nothing of why he may not have had the rosiest demeanour.

Many, many thanks

Glen
