Hi, Victor!

Apologies! Crossed wire - in my head!  I will however check your list, as there are certainly a couple you mention that I have not looked at at all, even with the help of the Glos. parishes map.  Will let you know how I get on.

Thanks for the information.

Geoff

Victor, that would be absolutely brilliant, and it's extremely kind of you to offer, but please don't let me take up  too much of your precious time.

I think I remarked in one of my posts that I had investigated some of these parishes in the past also those parishes nearer to Stow, such as Condicote and the Slaughters, also Bourton on the Hill, where Benjamin's wife, Ann Gilson was born in 1682, but all without success.

Hi, Victor!

Thanks very much for following up my query.  Yes, the result is disappointing, but I'm not unduly surprised; I've had some first-hand experience of trying to 'de-code' registers from the Restoration period and earlier in the case of Warwickshire parishes, so I know what it's like. As a next move I think it will be necessary to look at the PRs of the neighbouring parishes to Stanway and Guiting Power.

Over the past few days I've been investigating through Family Search the possibility of getting hold of records, particularly BTs, via microfilm/fiches through their Family History Centres - Cambridge is the nearest for us (60 miles retn.).  The charges would work out quite reasonably, set against the time and the distances one might have to travel to a county record office.  Whenever we have visited Warwicks. CRO or the Shakespeare Centre in the past we've made a 4-5 day stay of it, and we would plan to do the same if we ever visited Gloucester. The only person I know of who has made use of the Family Search record service lives is NZ.  I wonder what the downsides, if any, might be?

You suggested employing a paid researcher: could you give me a little more information on what the hourly/daily charges might be?

Regards

Geoff

Hi Trevor

Thank you for all the hard work you have put in on Frances.

This is all that I really have about Frances herself:-

Transcript:  Banns of marriage between Richard Marchel of Gt. Waltham, Batchelor & Frances Gunnel of this Parish, Spinster were duly published in this Church on Sundays, Octobr 3, 10, 17 by me J Firebrace

Richard Marchel & Frances Gunnel were married in this Church by Banns this fourth day of November by me J Firebrace

This marriage was                The mark of X Richd Marchel
solemnized between us        The mark of X Frances Gunnel

In the prescence of               John Gunnell    John Smith

Frances was buried at Gt. Leighs on 4th Sept. 1829, aged 77.

Between 1781 and 1803, Richard and Frances had eight children.  All baptised in Gt. Leighs (PR) and all recorded as Marshall.  I believe that the eldest, Edward (1781) is my ancestor and that it was he, who married Elizabeth Bearman in 1803 in Fairsted.

I have found later Gunnells in census records, living in Black Notley who were bapt. at the Braintree Independent chapel (London Road – I think).  Apparently there are also records for Bocking End CF for births 1738- 1857  and this might be a  'last chance' hope!

Kind regards

Noreen

Hi, Victor!

Follow on from previous post, re. Guiting Power baptisms:

1. Could you look specifically for the baptism of Benjamin Wallis in the period 1660-1675? (You may pick up incidentally the baptisms of other family members.  All appear to be children of Richard Wallis (b.1642).)

There are variant spellings of the Wallis surname in this register, e.g.: Wallasse/Wollasse; also spellings with the long 's', mis-transcribed as 'f', e.g. Wollof(fe).

The surname 'Wollams' also appears in this register and could potentially cause confusion.

Please do not feel under any pressure to carry out this search; I am very grateful for what you have offered to do, given the difficulties presented by these registers.

Regards

Geoff

Hi!

Thanks for this information.  My Frances seems to be earlier than this. It looks as though some of these individuals may belong in the next generation. I will need to do some follow up!

Hi, Victor!

Many thanks for your email and your efforts to tackle my requests. You have been able to confirm two important dates for me, the baptism of my ancestor, Joseph Wallace, in 1721, and the burial date for Benjamin.  I can well understand that the time you are able to spend on individual requests is limited just from the sheer volume here in the forum!

Since my earlier messages, on glancing at some of my documentation I was reminded of the problem of the 'Latin' in the parish register, and also of the fact that there are no extant records for
Stanway for the year 1666/7.

I'll get back to you regarding Guiting Power in the next few days, if I may - we're quite busy planning a major project at home at the moment - and I'll certainly bear in mind your recommendation of a researcher.  The main thing is that you've been able to set me on the road, and that's great!

Geoff

Hi, Rosie!

Glad you now have a definite lead to follow up.  I have used the Chippenham RO in the past; they have a very good documents service and are extremely helpful.

I have an extended family of Wallises in and around Chipping Campden and Broadway, descended from the 7 sons of *Benjamin Wallis, b.c1675 in Stanway.  I'm really only familiar with my own particular branch, which does not fit here, so cannot point to any definite link. Several villages worth looking at: Weston Subedge, Ashton Subedge , Church Honeybourne, Childwickham, Saintbury, Broadway, Willersey, Chipping Campden, Evesham, further south towards Stow on the Wold and west towards Cheltenham.

Please get back to me if you think I may be able to help.

Geoff
