Hello David Chambers from New England.
I am also David Chambers, born Belfast and now living in Co. Down, N Ireland.
My dad George CHAMBERS was born in Tullylish in 1904. His dad was David Chambers, b Tullylish 1873 and married Maggie SHAW in Tullylish Presbyterian Church 1896. In turn David's dad was George Chambers, b1824 Tullylish, marr Eliza Jane RUSSELL 1857 in Tullylish Parish Church. George's dad was Archibald James Chambers b c1799 in either Tullylish or possibly Scotland. He reputedly married Mary WILSON 1824 in Tullylish Parish Church. I say reputedly as I have a query with his occupations given at his marriage, and that given at his son George's marriage (labourer on one, bleacher on the other). I have come across the name MEEK somewhere, but I cannot remember where or when. Will keep looking! Any of these names make sense to you?
Regards,
David Chambers

Armagh / SLATOR/SLEATOR, HALL Marriage, Armagh City

Hello All,
My mother was a SLEATOR, b 1904 in Belfast. Her grandfather was a William James SLATER. He joined the RIC in 1867, aged 23, and the application form states he was born in Armagh. He was a servant. He was recommended by Thos. SIMPSON J.P. who lived in the townland of Ballyard. This is south of the city of Armagh on the road to Keady. I understand the person making the recommendation had to know the applicant personally, so it is possible that William may have worked for Simpson. I believe, but have no proof, that William's parents were James SLATER and Margaret HALL. They were married in 3rd Armagh Presbyterian church, c1840. I believe they lived in Maghery Kilcrany which is close to Ballyard. Does anyone recognise any of this?
Regards,
David Chambers, Co. Down.

Hello Sarah,

Many thanks. I appreciate that it is a long time since her request, and anything could have happened in the meantime. I will just have to sit and wait and hope someone else has the same interest!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and everyone else on Rootschat.

Regards,

David in Newtownards

Armagh / SLATOR/SLATER/SLEATOR

My ggrandfather was William James Slater who joined the RIC in 1867. He was a servant and came from "Armagh" according to his record, and was recommended by Thos Simpson JP. I understand that whoever recommended the recruit had to know the applicant personally and come from the same parish. I have found a Thos Simpson JP from Ballyards which I think is Lisnadill parish. Is he likely to be the same man?  All suggestions welcome.
