Donegal / Re: Mclaughlins of Carndonagh
« on: Saturday 14 January 12 20:37 GMT (UK)  »
My father was related to Tess Mclaughlin and my family always visted her & her husband Dennis  when we went to Ireland she was a great lady great.  Last time I was over I took my mother and children to see Tess's house.  as you say it lies in ruins.

My father was great friends with Paddy the Hill   My uncle  moved back to the area when I was small and still lives there to day (Dennis and Dinah McLaughlin)

My father as a young boy worked for Bertie Boggs (the butcher) in the villiage of Malin and remained friends throughout there lives

Hello there,  I am also a descendant of Owen Doherty.  My grandmother was Sarah Doherty the sister of Bridget.  Sarah married Patrick McLaughlin and stayed in Ireland although she did visit her siblings in America.  My father Eugene McLoughlin also visited relatives on his mothers side in America in the 60,S

Hello

I to am on my way to Donegal next week and have been advised to look at the Cardonagh and Letterkenny Library's for help.  If you go onto the Cardonagh Library  website it will link you to what they hold in the way of resource to help in your family history search.  They do seem to hold quite a bit and some information on wills.

You may find that Buncranna library offers the same if not more information.

Good Luck

:)  Well  a big thank you everyone for your help.

I think I can say that Joseph Foden the father of my grandmother who I knew nothing about was born to Joseph and  Phoebe and that Phoebe died in 1886 aged 52 & I believe that Joseph was married before this as he had a son Walter and was  a widower on the  1861 census.

From here I think I need to find the death of Josephs first wife somewhere between approx 1854 and 1861 when Joseph is named as a Widower or find Walters birth certificate.

I obviously will need the marriage of Joseph and his second wife Phoebe.

I would not have this information if it was not for all your help .

So once again thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Stumped any help
« on: Thursday 09 July 09 19:54 BST (UK)  »
Hello out there I am quite new to all this and I am getting to know how and where to look now and have had a lot of help from Roots, but I am completely puzzled by  one side of my family .  My grandmother was Cathrine Foden born 1905 her parents were Mary Foden nee Donnelly (her father was Bernard) and Father was Joseph Foden and his father was also Joseph  Cathrine was born in New Summer Street Birmingham

Mary Donnelly was born in 1874 and Joseph Foden was born in 1869/70.

I cannot seem to trace the Fodens anywhere and I have  not tried the Donnelly's as yet.

Whenever I try and trace a Foden It seems they are all up in Lancashire and surrounding areas no where near Birmingham and I cannot find a connection

Any advice

Thanks for your time and effort, I did know some of what you have printed as you say from previous help (sorry  I do no know how to copy  from one email to another - I am looking at getting some training on the computer).

I am a complete and utter novice and I am trying to find my way round, I do not know how or where you  and the others were able to access this information I assume there is a site I can contact or pay for help.

I suppose in answer to your question on what do I need to know now is really anything as I do not know anything about this family before  or after they went to America.

Sorry I did not mean to cause extra work or confusion and do appreciate the enormous amount of help you and the others do for people like myself.

Thanks once again,

Donegal / 1901 census help where do I look
« on: Friday 26 June 09 20:16 BST (UK)  »
I have found my great grandfather and his family on the 1911 Census ( thanks to this site) Living in  house no. 16 in Drumaville.  Any ideas how I find out where that is/was in Drumaville.  I have looked but cannot find Henry P McLaughlin his wife Cassie, his mother Mary who would be about 82 and their children on the previous census .  I am not sure if they would come under Moville Higher or lower but could not find them there I am not sure how the areas were broken up for the census.  Any suggestions please.

Thanks for all the help so far,  I am hoping to go to Drumaville in August so I can see for myself where all this history started.

Mary was my grandmother Sarah's sister.  Sarah  died when my father was about 9.  Know one in the family knows anything about this side of the family.  I know from  previous help from this site that Mary and her husband Michael were on the 1920 census in Brookline, Boston and I believe other family members travelled out to see her and some stayed on.  Other family members were sister Bridget, Annie , Rose,  Nancy and Cathrine.( Catherine I believe became a Nun). The brothers were Eugene, John and Dennis.  They were all from Clonmany Co. Donegal Ireland.  Their parents were Dennis and Mary Doherty.

Any pointers or help gratefully received.

Many thanks
