World War One / Resigned Commission?
« on: Friday 02 September 11 18:09 BST (UK)  »
I am slightly confused as there is an entry for the conscription (in Surrey) of a C W Smee into the 15th Battalion of the London Regiment dated 22 April 1918

My confusion is that I think this is Cyril Walter Smee who I thought was a Lance Corporal in the 15th Battalion prior to his being gazetted as being promoted to Acting Captain from the training reserve in Feb 1917 following which he was posted to France in April 1917 and then resigned his commission in Feb 1918 which I had taken to mean he had been injured?

If he resigned for another reason it seems strange he was presumably shipped back from France only to be conscripted in England?

Thanks but I contacted Cardiff County Council and they confirmed that as wdytyanoidea suspected the Rev.  W E Winks and hs wife were buried in Cathays, and a week later they kindly sent me a photo of the monument which certainly save me from a long drive  :)

Does anyone know if there was/is a Burial ground attached to the chapel in the 1910/30 period? If not which Cemetery would have been used?

Essex Lookup Requests / Re: 1871 Census - JONES - Tendring

Sorry about the delay :D

It has taken me a while to sort out the Deex/Deeks mess as I only get to the Essex Record Office when there are cheap deals available at the hotel, one day, I'll bite the bullet and move to Chelmsford

Thinking about it, it is a little strange that as Sarah appears to have been in a "common law" relationship, that the Vicar would have accepted her signing as Smee .........

The old version Familysearch can still be used.

Are you assuming that all the records that are in NFS were in the old system?

"Find more records by searching on the updated FamilySearch site."

If one could have found the 1898 Dublin marriage for the London born Charles Edward Smee in the old system there would have been a lot less confused people trying to work out why he was a widower when he married in London in 1905  :)

Also can you find a Sarah Smee anywhere in any of your census sources?  We have found that at Agnes Jones marriage to Charles Barfield in 1875 his three sisters were witnesses along with the lady called Sarah SMEE - about whom we know nothing.  We are hoping that she will be Agnes's witness and may give us more clues about her.  Probably best to look in the 1871 for Kirby to start with.

Interesting! Is one of the sisters called Louisa?
She married George Deex (spelling varies with Deeks) in 1877, his uncle David had married Ann Smee in 1851, Ann had a brother Joseph Smee (1835-1897)

The only Sarah Smee around at the time so far as I know was a "Sarah Smee " who was the mother of Joseph Smee's daughter Mary E(?) Smee.
I don't know who Sarah was because (deep breath)

Joseph married his second wife Hannah Hunt in 1871, Hannah died 1872 and Joseph and Sarah (born Great Oakley) and the baby had moved to Rotherhithe by the 1881 census - Mary Smee was baptised there in 1882.

Even more confusingly "Sarah" is 33yo in 1881 but has leapt to 58 by 1891!

Could Sarah have been another Barfield sister?

Mary E Smee was born at Great Oakley 27 Feb 1874. No birth registration as a Smee and presumably no point in looking for a baptism in Great Oakley.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: missing pages of the 1861
« on: Thursday 13 January 11 11:53 GMT (UK)  »
Another area that is missing some pages is Forest Gate, West Ham. Essex
The area ends at Folio 216 which is page 36 (it is heavily damaged).

Folio 198 says there should be 54 pages following it, so 18 pages of Forest Gate are missing, including Whitehall place. :'(

I have checked all the websites and even the Microfilm at the Essex Record Office. I spoke to National Archives and they said the only public access is to a copy of the same microfilm so I very much doubt the pages exist?

Has anyone worked out how to identify a (possible) marriage partner in the Civil Registrations?
Without the the ability to filter on
volume number:
page number:
digital folder number
:

or the Quarter, it can be a very long list for some Places!

Helpful hint - if you want to filter on  Dublin South or Dublin North do NOT enter a space in the Place Filter ..... :-X
