Devon / Marriage of Joseph SALTER alias BAYLEY
« on: Tuesday 29 June 10 20:02 BST (UK)  »
I have traced the marriage of Joseph and Ann Restorick in Awliscombe on the 24th November 1774. I can't find either of their parents names in the Parish Records. Has anyone heard of either of them?  I have their children's names and other descendants to date but can't get back further. There seems to be a gap in the records  of about 30 years with no record of Salter or Bayley.
Can anyone help?

Devon / Alias's in Devon
« on: Tuesday 29 June 10 19:46 BST (UK)  »
I recently visited the Devon Records Office to look up my family 'Bailey'. Using the names I already had I found that several of the people had the surname Bayly/Bayley/Baily alias Salter or Salter alias Bayley/Baily etc. Has anyone any idea why they used the alias's?
This goes back from 1774 (Joseph Salter alias Bayley to 1639 Amias Bayley alias Salter.
Any info would be most welcome.
The village was Awliscombe.

Devon Lookup Requests / Re: awliscombe parish registers - BAILEY
« on: Monday 05 October 09 14:28 BST (UK)  »
Sorry for the confusion but John Bailey's father William died in Awliscombe in 1848 at age 67, hence the death certificate. This makes his birth year 1781c but I don't have access to records before 1813. William was married to Maria Woodland in Awliscombe in 1807. William was a carpenter, as was his son John.  William had five children, Sally, John, Joseph, Ann and Sarah Maria - I have their dates of baptism. It is possible William's father was a Joseph Bailey born 1757 and his mother Ann Restorick. They all lived in Awliscombe.
I hope you are able to help me.

I'm trying to find any members of the Bailey family before 1815. I have found one, John Bailey, born 1811c but have been unable to confirm this anywhere on the internet. I have his father's death certificate but need a date of birth. Can anyone help me, please?

Devon Lookup Requests / Awliscombe Parish Registers - BAILEY

I've traced my g-g-g-g-grandfather Joseph Bailey born 1757 died 1813, his wife and children but can't get any further back. I know the family lived in Awliscombe for several generations after but not where they lived before 1757. Awliscombe is fairly near to Honiton.
I have used ancestry, Genes Reunited, etc. There's nothing on the lds site either.
Can anyone help?

Devon / Re: Parish records in Devon before 1813

Thank you all for your suggestions.
Unfortunately, as mentioned, the IGI do not have any information on Awliscombe. Ancestry seems to have been the most help, although I still cannot get past William Bailey born 1783c -1848 and his possible father Joseph Bailey born 1757c - 1813. I have tried all the sites mentioned and others. I seem to  have reached a dead end. I have sent off for William's death certificate in case there is any other information.
Thanks once again.

Devon / Parish records in Devon before 1813
« on: Sunday 23 November 08 16:03 GMT (UK)  »
I've managed to trace my great-grandfather and some of his siblings in the Parish records for Awliscombe in Devon. (I bought copies from Devon Family History Society) The records name their parents as John and Ann Bailey. Unfortunately, John Bailey was born circa 1811 and the records only go back to 1813. I have found a William Bailey who married Maria Woodland in 1807 and several children born after 1813. Both William and John Bailey were carpenters. Is it possible to find births before 1813 via the internet, as I live in France. If not, how do I go about getting this info?

Devon Lookup Requests / Gittisham Parish Registers-BAILEY
« on: Saturday 08 November 08 16:22 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to trace any info on my g-g-grandfather John Bailey and his parents. He was born circa 1811 and married Ann Turner also of Gittisham. His children were all born in Awliscombe, so I assume he moved there after marrying. His parents might be a William Bailey and Maria. I don't know of any other way to get information further  back. Can you help?

Hi, I hope someone can help me. I've just managed to trace my grandfather. William John Carr. He was a lighterman, apprenticed in 1891 completed in 1898.   From reading the above messages, it seems that being a lighterman runs in the family. Are there any other Carr's mentioned in the apprenticeship records. He lived in Lambeth. I'm hoping to get his date of birth and parents names from the binding records too.
This is the first time I've posted anything!
