Derry (Londonderry) / Re: Burial in Ballyronan

He went by William Talbot most of the time, including in most official documents. When he married Ann Watts in 1843 in Armagh, he went by 'Daniel O’Holihan'. When he married in 1850 in Newcastle, he used 'William O'Houlahan Talbot'.

William Talbot married again in 1850 and died in Glasgow in 1876 so I'm fairly sure Ann would have been buried in a location close to where she died.

Derry (Londonderry) / Burial in Ballyronan

Hello! I'm trying to track down the burial of Ann Talbot who died on the 20 May 1849 in Ballyronan, County Derry. This was reported in the newspaper later in the year because her husband was a well-known Irish piper, William Talbot. As far as I know, they were Catholic.

There is a twist. William Talbot may have been a stage name. There is evidence that he was born Daniel O'Hoolahan (or a variant of that spelling), so it's possible his wife (who died giving birth to a stillborn baby), was buried as Ann O'Hoolahan. She was around 33 years old when she died.

At the moment I'm not sure if local burials for that period are published anywhere accessible so it'd be helpful to know where I should be searching. Thanks!

PS The original notice recorded that she died at "Ballyronan near Tuam", but I'm starting out with the assumption that 'Tuam' was actually 'Toome', a town near to Ballyronan in County Derry. If I'm unsuccessful with this search, I'll widen my geographical net.

Ireland / Help with Irish place name - "Ballyronan near Tuam"
« on: Sunday 24 April 22 15:59 BST (UK)  »
Hello! I'm after some help with identifying the most likely location of death referenced in a death notice published on 20 July 1849 in the Anglo-Celt newspaper (which is based in County Cavan). It records the death of "Mrs. Talbot, wife of the Irish piper, who is well known in this neighbourhood". The notice states she died on 20 May 1849 at "Ballyronan near Tuam".

This location is ambiguous because the spelling of one or other place would seem to be incorrect. There's a town called Ballyronan a few miles from Toome in County Derry, so this is one option for the placename. There’s also a townland called Ballinrooaun in County Galway not too far from Tuam, but there may be others options as well. If I can pin down the location, given the specific date of death, I might be able to find a burial record. Any help would be much appreciated!

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Re: St Nicholas, Wickham, Hampshire - ANDREWS

Hello, I have subs to Ancestry and Findmypast. The Hampshire parish records in Findmypast list Wickham rather than Whitchurch as the place of baptism for William and Sarah Andrews. I'm not sure why Ancestry has them recorded for Whitchurch as well. It's one of the issues I'm trying to resolve by locating the digitised images as opposed to transcriptions.

Re John James Andrews, yes there are two possible baptisms:

John James Andrews baptised 02 Jul 1815 at Wickham, son of John and Margaret
John James Andrews baptised 06 Mar 1815 at Fareham, son of John and Margaret

I have the image of the Fareham baptism and that records John's occupation as 'Servant'. Another reason why I'm keen to see the original of the Wickham baptisms.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, he definitely was a publican of the Rising Sun in Fareham (and a brewer) in his later years. He may well have been a brewer earlier in his career too but that's what I'm trying to pin down ideally. Thanks, Phil

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / St Nicholas, Wickham, Hampshire - ANDREWS
« on: Monday 16 March 20 15:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!

I've been searching high and low for the digitised images of the register of baptisms for St Nicholas, Wickham in the range 1815-1830. My first question is: have I overlooked them? It looks like they have been digitised but perhaps they're only available from an LDS library or HCC. I'd like to see the images for the following baptisms because I'm specifically interested in the father's occupation.

Baptisms of the children of John and Margaret Andrews:

1) John James Andrews baptised 2nd July 1815 at Wickham, Hampshire
2) Margaret Andrews baptised 11th August 1816 at Wickham, Hampshire
3) Sarah Andrews baptised 1st May 1818 at Wickham, Hampshire
4) William Andrews baptised 25th January 1820 at Wickham, Hampshire
5) Frances Ellen Andrews baptised 23rd September 1829 at Titchfield, Hampshire
6) Frances Ellen Andrews baptised 19th December 1830 at Titchfield, Hampshire

I'd be more than happy to pay for someone to check the records but I also thought that someone might be able to tell me if they are available online somewhere.

Many thanks!

Yes, I agree. 'Hardy' is a tenuous transcription at best. I think the search goes on!

Ah, thank you! I thought I'd checked the IGI record sets. Clearly not carefully enough, clearly.

I've found the baptism in question.

Best

Phil
