I had thought had he absconded but think it very unlikely. Catherine lists herself as Catherine Herbert, a widow on the 1871 census and then also remarries 18 Nov 1872 as Catherine Herbert, a widow. So I do believe he died.

My 3rd great grandfather David Herbert Philip’s death has proved elusive for over 20 years. He was born illegitimate so sometimes is David Herbert (census returns, childrens births) or David Herbert Philip (marriage certificate.) He was born 30 Jan 1839 and married Catherine Thomas 1860 in Wick, Glamorgan. He worked as an agricultural labourer and they had 2 children- Sarah (1860) and Martha (1863) and according to the 1863 baptism records were living in the union workhouse, Bridgend. On the 1871 census Catherine is a widow living in Cefn Glas, Newcastle, Bridgend and shortly after remarries. I therefore assume David died between 1863-1871 but have never found his death. I have searched for David Herbert/ Herbert Philip/ Philips and any other variation I could think of. I recently read it wasn’t compulsory to register deaths until 1874 but I find it hard to believe his death wasn’t registered somewhere. I know it is a long shot but does anyone have access to the Tabernacle burials for Bridgend to see if he is listed?
Unfortunately I am not local so If anyone is able to help I would be extremely grateful

Armed Forces / Ancestor Thomas Downing in Napoleonic Wars
« on: Tuesday 01 August 23 16:58 BST (UK)  »
I have my ancesor, Thomas Downing’s service record which tells me he signed up 2 Aug 1804 and served until 31 March 1817. He is listed as serving in the 2nd battalion Royal Artillery under General Ellis Walker and serving in Major C H Godby’s company as a gunner.

I am struggling to find out where the would be based / have served etc. Does anyone have any ideas? If anyone could offer any help I would appreciate it.

Thank you

Thank you I have contacted and awaiting a reply as I cannot find it for sale on the Ceredigion Society website. Unfortunately being on the other side of the country it is quite a distance to try and get to the archives.

Kind regards

Pembrokeshire Lookup Requests / Blaenywaun Burial Ground, St Dogmaels
« on: Saturday 10 July 21 09:10 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to the burial records or monumental inscriptions for Blaenywaun, St Dogmaels?

I have managed to confirm (from a newspaper) that my ancestor John Owens was buried a Blaenywaun on the 3 Dec 1934. So I am now trying to trace if his wife Ann is also there. Ann Owens died 12 Dec 1900.

If anyone is able to help with any information I would be extremely grateful.

If anyone still has access to the burial records for Treorchy Cemetery, would they be able to kindly check them for Susanna / Susan Evans. She died in the September quarter of 1904.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA Confusion
« on: Sunday 17 January 21 22:34 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you I am aware they are estimates but I had traced the paper trail on my grandfather’s side back over 200 years and they are all English so for ancestry to say my dad has no connections to England is strange.

The paper trail is only as good as the person who provided the information at the time. Whilst I would not judge anyone, people for various reasons may choose to lie / hide the truth when giving information on documents.

So unfortunately the DNA is not backing up my paper trail.

Feeling very confused

Thank you for everyone’s help but I still believe if my dads ancestry (via his dad) was 50% English then English should show up on his Ancestry DNA no matter what percentage that would be - so even 1%
