Fermanagh / Re: Hughes Family of Clones, Fermanagh

Thanks for the link.  There are marriages back to 1821 and I had a quick look at the early years.  However, I feel Arthur and Margaret Hughes were married before that.  There are large inconsistencies between the ages of the girls both within the shipping records and birth years based on death certs.  However, it looks like the eldest is likely to have been born a bit after 1815.

Sadly, I have no further information on the girls' Irish life and I am not aware of any other family members coming to Australia for more hints.  The girls all gave their religion as Roman Catholic on the shipping records and all were buried in Catholic cemeteries.  However, I think online RC records in Clones start well after they left.

Clare / Re: Fahy Family of Kilrush - possibly Carnacalla or Mount Pleasant (Clarefield)

Thanks for your response rathmore.

I'm aware of the Amelia Thompson records; an undesirable voyage with a death every 3 days on average mainly from typhus.  Another chap jumped overboard with delirium leaving a wife and two children.  After all that they spent 3 weeks in quarantine in Sydney before going ashore.

I'm hoping that someone may know more about the Fahys of the Kilrush area.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

Hi aghadowey,

Thanks for your reply.  I had seen the second reference but not the first so it helps to enlighten me.

There is a photo of the house in use here:

What a shame to see it in decline although sadly it is the norm.

Thanks again,
Alan

Clare / Fahy Family of Kilrush - possibly Carnacalla or Mount Pleasant (Clarefield)
« on: Thursday 12 December 13 00:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

The New South Wales 1888 death certificate of my g-g grandmother, Margaret O'Neill (nee Fahey) born 1815, who came to Australia in 1838, states her father Patrick Fahy (Fahey?) was a schoolmaster probably near Kilrush in County Clare.  I have found the reference to the 1824 Irish Education Survey which lists a Patrick Fahy, master of a school at Carnacalla.  I also notice that the road from Kilrush to Carnacalla is called Fahy's Road.  The records indicate that my Patrick Fahy was married to Catherine Kelty.

I am just wondering whether anyone knows more about this family or the Fahy families of Carnacalla/Kilrush?

In the shipping records, Margaret says she was a native of Kilrush although the death certificate says she was from Mount Pleasant.  She was a housekeeper so perhaps she worked at Mount Pleasant House in Clarefield.  Does anyone know more about Mount Pleasant House which I believe was occupied by magistrate Joseph Cox, eg approx when it was built?

Thanks
Alan, Sydney Australia

New Zealand Completed Requests / LOOK-UP Auckland Archives Probate *COMPLETED*
« on: Friday 14 October 11 06:59 BST (UK)  »
As I live in Australia it would be greatly appreciated if a kind person could obtain some information from probate papers which I understand are available for viewing at the Archives Office in Auckland.

I am hoping to track down photos, etc of my great uncle, a daughter of whom passed away in 1994 in Auckland and her probate is listed as having Open Access.  From Archway the details are:

WILLIAMS Ethel May - Papatoetoe - Retired
Years   1995-1995
Agency   BAZZ
Series   1570
Box/Item   5083/-
Record No   94/1995
Department for Courts, Auckland High Court

http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=17018262

It would be great if someone could take photos of the papers for me (if permissible) or, if that is not possible, record any names, addresses, etc of the executors, beneficiaries, witnesses, etc. which may give me leads to find out more about this Kiwi branch of my family.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply rosie17.

Based on census data and the IGI I had Helen born to Alexander Taylor and Mary Cruickshank christened 23/2/1837 in Tarves.  There doesn't appear to be a later birth of a 2nd Helen or perhaps Ellen that I can find.  Any thoughts or comments?

Thanks Flattybasher9.

I had the burial details you provided but not the possible birth date of James Lumsden.  Based on census records I am pretty sure James was born in Kincardine O'Neil to parents Alexander Lumsden and Jean (probably Fife) which makes the birth look a good fit so thank you.
