Kent / Re: Kent GRIGGS
« on: Sunday 06 February 11 12:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Tony,
I am helping my friend's family to research their Griggs history, and I am keen to see if any of it rings familiar with any of your research as we are in danger of getting stuck!
The basic line is:
J M GRIGGS b 1936 Dover
JAMES GRIGGS b 1900 Dover, m ANNIE CRISP
JAMES THOMAS GRIGGS b 1870 Hougham, Dover m MARY ANN EDWARDS
JAMES GRIGGS b 1844 Charlton by Dover, m MARY ANN DOWLE (DOWELL, DOWD etc!)
CHARLES GRIGGS b around 1806 Kent, living in Elham village in the 1841 census. He married ANNE HARRIS at Lympne in 1833 and lived around the Hythe before moving to Vicarage Corner, Elham in about 1840 (this from birthplaces of children).  in the 1851 census, Ann is listed as widow. We can find no death, the marriage predates registration and the parish record transcript doesn't add much, and he only appears on the first census which gives no place of birth (other than in county of Kent) and is notoriously inaccurate on ages too!

I know this doesn't give you much to go on, but I wonder if it ties in with any particular branch of the Griggs family that you have come across?  James and Charles are the only male forenames in the family until a Reginald Griggs in 1904.

Hope you can help!
Best wishes,
Frazer

Kent Lookup Requests / Cemetery / burial lookup - GRIGGS
« on: Sunday 06 February 11 11:49 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find the death of a Charles Griggs who was born circa 1805, youngest child born 1849 in Elham, Kent and then wife Ann listed as a widow living in Charlton, Dover in 1851 - so in other words he died betwen 1848 and 1851 (assuming his wife told the truth to the census taker!).
I imagine he was buried without a headstone, but I wonder if anyone has burial records for Dover that might help?
There is a death in Dover in 1854 but we have ruled that one out.
Many thanks,
Frazer

Kent Lookup Requests / Lympne Parish Registers - GRIGGS
« on: Saturday 05 February 11 11:07 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching the Griggs family of Dover / Hythe / Elham and am trying to find out as much as possible about a Charles Griggs b 1805 (thereabouts) who married Ann Harris at Lympne (I presume St Stephens) in March 1833.
The marriage is listed in the LDS records but the detail is scant - no addresses or parents' names. I wondered if the original parish record contained any more?
I live a long way from Kent, so it's not easy to check in person!
Hope somebody can help,
Frazer

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Re: GILBY - Raunds nonconformist records

Thank you for trying - I am wondering whether this was where the death was registered and that the burial ground was elsewhere  -possibly even the local church? I don't know enough about how these records were kept to know.

Sandy asked for the burials I already have and they are:
Thomas Gilby buried 15 Jan 1809 listed as Raunds
Hannah Gilby (wife) buried 9 Aug 1875 Raunds
William Gilby (their son) buried 26 April 1835 Raunds
William Gilby (his son, died 1 month) 9 Aug 1796 Raunds

All lived in Molesworth, Huntingdonshire.

Also from the non-conformist records (Quaker) are the burials of other Gilby's from the neighbouring village of Bythorn, and I need to take a view if they are related or not:

William Gilby buried 13 Feb 1778 Raunds
Rebecca Gilby (his wife) buried 10 Dec 1781 Raunds
The birth of their son Josiah is listed as Raunds 1738, the marriage of their daughter Olive takes place in Raunds 1751, and their daughter Rebecca is buried at Raunds Jul 16 1813

All these are found in Quaker records. I think they must be related but it is difficult to work out how!

Thank you all for your amazing interest - I will post more over the weekend in terms of specific burials. Just returned from trip away so sorry I have been quiet!
Really appreciate the help - Frazer

Hi Sandy,
Yes, clocked that. They are a family living a mile up the road from our lot, also Quakers and with a run of Thomas's and Williams in their line - but I cannot find a bit of paper to connect them. As we all know you can come a cropper if you just make assumptions!
