Technical Help / Firefox False Alarm
« on: Friday 12 February 10 01:26 GMT (UK)  »
Just in case anyone was concerned by another member's post, here's the reality:

http://www.scmagazineus.com/mozilla-recants-assertion-that-firefox-add-on-has-trojan/article/163611/

I'd rather see a software publisher be over-cautious and publicise a potential threat, even if it turns out to be a false alarm than spend months or years trying to brush it under the carpet...  :-X

Technical Help / Re: installing mac on windows pc

@ redroger - if you're talking about replacing said laptop, then Mac v Wintel is a whole different set of arguments and considerations - and will also doubtless generate a stack of opinions from supporters of both.

I think you need "Bootcamp" on the Mac to use Windows, but I`m not a Mac user so don`t quote me...

You don't  *need* Bootcamp, but it certainly makes it easier.

Both OS's were designed to work on their respective target platforms; either can be made to run on the other. Just depends how much work you want to do to have a machine run how you want it...or you just like a challenge

I am told, but have never tried it, that it is possible to install a windows system on a Mac. Anyone confirm please?

Of course it is possible - easier if the Mac is Intel and not PPC...but why would you?  8)

It's also possible to rip a 302 out of a Boss Mustang and shove in a 327 Chev... ;D

You mean the Apple operating system?

Simple answer=no...

...but as with most technology it's never quite that easy.

Less simple answer, the Mac OS EULA prohibits its installation on non-Apple hardware and Apple will neither offer the OS nor support it on non Apple kit. However there are plenty of OS X installs running on non-Apple hardware; technically it can be done. There are also OS X derived operating systems (such as the Darwin project, originally supported by Apple).

So the real answer is yes you can if you're prepared to accept either questionable legality or something that's OS X-like and *may* run the application you are interested in. Oh and do you want to keep Vista as well?

Suppose you might be able to get OS X running in a virtual machine under Windows? Never tried that - not that I'm suggesting I would have tried any of the above options either ;)

Whether OS X is easier to use than Vista will depend on what you are used to and how easily you adapt to a different operating environment. It's different !

Be interesting to see what FH app your cousin is talking about.

Technical Help / Re: Losing Internet connection

JeanH

Have you tried swapping the filter? Assume it's just a plug-in type and not a built-in filtered master socket?

Otherwise, you should be able to get an idea of your line quality from the configuration interface of your "modem" - assuming it's a model you can actually access (some ISPs lock their kit down and I haven't a clue what kit TalkTalk provides).  Just because your voice line sounds ok doesn't mean the quality is up to sustainable DSL delivery.

Thought this might amuse?
Came across the attached for one of my other half's ancestors (in 1901 ), 7th line down, and can just see the poor enumerator writing what he heard then doing a double-take...what, no eye-patch or parrot on shoulder, oh you said...

Technical Help / Re: laptop screen gone big!!!!
« on: Sunday 14 June 09 21:54 BST (UK)  »
Don't know if this is any use but found this quote when trying to find the nb100's native reolution:

"A bizarre option is included when pressing Fn+ESC, which for some reason dumps the screen to 800x600, a significant drop from the native 1,024x600. We're at a loss as to why it even exists. The screen is also capable of enabling resolutions of up to 1,920x1,080, but anything above 1,024x600 will result in you requiring to scroll the screen using the mouse. It's a nice work-around though for those applications that haven't been designed to take the netbook's low resolution screen into account, including the bundled Norton Internet Security (NIS), with the first pop up already beyond the limits of usable screen real estate."

So the netbook's native resolution is 1024x600. If for some reason it's not using the correct display adapter driver, that resolution may not be available?
