The Common Room / This 'NEW' web-site lay-out
« on: Sunday 23 December 12 14:50 GMT (UK)  »
Sorry,

Call me what-ever you like - no offence intended - BUT
this 'NEW' web-site lay-out is really, really confusing !!

Call it 'my advancing years' - ( looking forward to my OAPension at the end of the year ... )
but you have 'FIXED' what wasn't BROKEN !!!!!

The original format was OK - simple to use - so WHY CHANGE IT ????

Totally confused !!!! ( and this is BEFORE opening the bottle of Bells !!! )

Is this about keeping Web-site designers usefully employed ???????

Will try to get past Christmas with that bottle of Bells and a bottle of Coke
and try again to understand it in the New Year - hopefully ???

Sorry, I had to say this.....

Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year to you all

Mick

Family History Beginners Board / BBC WW2 War Stories web-site
« on: Monday 01 October 12 13:17 BST (UK)  »
This is a request, not so much for Family History, but help regarding my areas Local History.

I found on the BBC WW2 War Stories web-site an entry for someone who lived 2 doors away from where I still live.
I knew his brothers that he mentioned, also his parents ( when I was a kid ).

I took note of the ID Number and Article number, then e-mailed the BBC for help in contacting him.

Unfortunately, all I received was a 'stock' automated reply, and that if I had a complaint etc, who to contact.

My problem is - where do I go from here ?

Has any-one else experienced this 'problem' with this site ?

Any suggestions as to what I should do next would be gratefully appreciated ? ( giving up is NOT an option !! )

Should I resort to the good 'ol pen, paper and s.a.e ?

Thanks in advance

Mick

Dear adj

Just on one of those strange hunches we all have, I looked back to find Richard L's address in 1881, ie 3 Nelson Square.
He IS still there in 1891, there was another family also at the same address, which is not un-common.

On three of the Census sites indexes he did not show up, possibly because it looked ( to me ) like Newma ? on the image.

The Film is 480 Folio 56 Page 2 :

Richard L ( Newman ) 67 Widower - a Cooper  - b. St John Clerkenwell
No other people with him in his 'part' of the house.

His trade of Cooper is the same from all the Censii of 1841 to 1891

The other family sharing the house were Joseph & Alice Seel ? - 50 / 47 + kids.
This Alice was born Northampton ? - so not one of Richard L's kids.

This throws into confusion Carolines death in the Pancras Reg Dist.
Do you have the certificate to confirm this one or is it a 'guesstimation', of which I am guilty of a lot of times !!!

The Caroline in 'my holdings' is assumed as the Widow of a Henry Newman.

A possible, better 'fit', is Caroline Newman - Death  1891-Q1 Camberwell RD  age 54  CBY 1837 ?

It may be worth the 'investment' of a certificate to verify this - unless some-one else out there has the information ?

Samuel J S - 1915-Dec Qtr - Woodstock RD

( Hope this last entry does not conflict with living persons policy ? )

Also other Births - see site for names :
1937-Sep Qtr - Islington RD
1939-Jun Qtr - Chipping N RD
1948-Mar Qtr - Chipping N RD

Some other Stockford Marriages in Woodstock RD
1869-Dec x 2 Mgs

Then, when they began to include the Spouse surname
1937-Mar Qtr Islington RD

Hi boocey and William

boocey, sorry for the delay in getting back with the Newman Name Society information.
I had to verify with our group that it was OK to advertise the 2 links below.

And William, grateful thanks for not charging me for the later GRO information.
With the dread of a £78,000 bill arriving for my share of National Debt every little bit saved helps !!!!

Also, to paraphrase the immortal words of the captured U-Boat Captain in Dad's Army :
"Zat name vill alzo go in ze book"  ( or database )

Cheers and good luck in your research

Mick

Hi

You probably have the marriage of John to Jane Merrick 1834-03-31 at Castle Church Stafford ?.

The following is offered for consideration, without verification :

1851Census - Film 2016 Folio 193 / B shows

John Newman - visitor 45 married -
Sergeant # # ( 2 indecipherable letters ) Staffordshire Militia - born Windsor Berks
John possibly died 1868-Q4 Stafford ?
His son John shown with Jane in 1851 seems too old to be the son of Jane ?
Could Jane have been a second wife ?
Could that 'L P' in the 61 reference indicate 'something' pensioner ?? wild guess ?

The 71 reference mentions Alfred P Newman 13 b. Ellesmere SAL
FreeBDM has : Alfred Pointon Newman b.1858-Q4 Ellesmere, Married 1882-Q4 St Asaph ( Wales area ) plus
another Marriage 1892-Q3 at Halifax,and a possible Death 1927-Q1 at Cardiff ??
1881 Film 3541 Folio 55 at Nantwich has an Alfred 22 un-married b. Ellesmere a Chemist & Druggist
with his Parents - Henry 43 & Eliza 55 ( Henry possibly the son of John & Jane ).

Going back to John,the son ( b.c1829 ) - possibly d. 1882-Q1 Stafford
He may have married Ann SCANDRETT - 1859-Q3 Stafford
1881 Film 2688 Folio 146 at Stafford shows ( all b. Stafford )
John 53 Cordwainer, Ann 51,
John 20 ( possibly d.1928-Q3 and married Ann Richardson 1885-Q2 ),
George Henry 18 ( possibly d.1884-Q1 ? ), Frederick A 13 ( possibly d.1942-Q1 ), Arthur Edward 9.

Rebecca b.1838-Q1 possibly married Samuel Evans - 1859-Q1 Stafford
This may account for the Samuel H Evans b. Liverpool and aged 6 in the 1871 reference.

Sarah Jane b.1846-Q4, possibly married 1865-Q2 Stafford ?

If you can confirm any I would be grateful

Mick - a small cog in the Newman Name Society

Braintree - Essex

Hi all,

I'm hoping to do a bit of 'pay-forward' after receiving a letter from a lady
whose information was of help to 'stovepipe'.( recent RootsChat posting )

The lady, who is not on the Internet, has given me the following known
information on a distant relative on her husbands side of her tree.

"Thomas NEWMAN sailed on the military ship 'Regent' to India.
He embarked on the 4th February 1816.
His occupation is given as labourer, from Braintree, Essex, age 19.(cby 1797 ? )
He married in India in 1818 ( Anne HEWITT )."

I realise that this is obviously a long shot for any results given the above
scarcity of information !.

I am assuming that Thomas had 'joined up' - possibly the Army ?

Could some-one please look up for any Thomas Newman baptisms around the 1797
period in Braintree Essex, give or take a couple of years ( just in case he
'fibbed' about his age when joining up !! ).

Would any-one have further information as regards to the 'Regent' ?

Thanks in advance for what-ever information regarding any of the above that
can be supplied.

Mick Newman ( not related to Thomas )
