Hello Stepcar,

Yes, There is actually an interesting story about John's arrival to Australia.

Are you a descendent this HARRINGTON family? Apart from myself, there are two others also descendants who have been compiling history of/about this line.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Feel free to message me separately, if you wish to.

Kind regards,

Laura

Hmmmmm,

No, Haven't checked those yet.

That's a good idea Merlin.

Have a cousin living close to there, who's also interested in this branch of the family.

Will email her with the suggestion that she takes a look  ;D

Kind regards,

Laura

Hi Merlin,

Thank you for checking the NSW Police Gazette.

Yes, the first is from 1874 VIC Gazette.

So, who know's what he was up to! Nothing found so far in newspapers for the time frame either.

He died in a Benevolent Asylum in Hotham. Death certificate mentions parents and origins correctly, but knows nothing of marriage or children - though virtually all were alive and living not that far away.....wouldn't it be nice to have a crystal ball sometimes?

Many thanks to all, for your interest and thoughts. As always all help is very much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Laura

Hi again Sparrette,

I can see your reference to John HUMPHRIES birth. However, John was born 8th January 1872. Registration only happened on 15th January 1873.

I've pretty well got this group covered now. Don't want to waste anyone's time looking up BDM's etc.

Just keen to know if NSW Police Gazettes hold any new info based on the italics noted above.

Thanks very much.

Kind regards,

Laura

 Hello Sparrett,

Yes, surname does change between various records. He was actually born HUMPHRIS from what can be so far ascertained. Most Australian records use the HUMPHRIES spelling

Yes, his wife was Sarah FRENCH.

I am lucky to have most of the data of this couple filled in, including their offspring etc.

I am trying to piece together a period that George disappeared and his wife appearred to become a woman of "other means".

Yes, George was variously labourer, seaman, stevedore, sailor through different parts of his life.

The reference in italics above is from a Victorian Police Gazette recently supplied to me by a private researcher. I'm keen to know if anythinf further was written up in the NSW Police Gazette in reference to George's where-abouts/activities in the time frame between then and his death back in Victoria in 1882.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Kind regards,

Laura

Hello All,

Hoping someone here may have access to NSW Police Gazette.

Looking for any further details regarding George HUMPHRIES. So far known:

"Information is requested respecting George Humphreys, a sailor, who was last heard of in the month of January 1872, when he was discharged from the barque Rotumah in Sydney.  Information to the Inspector General of Police."

George was married in Victoria in 1852 and died there in 1882. He seemed to "disappear" after the birth of his last child in 1872, so the above information explains some :)

Hoping something further is in the NSW Police Gazettes.

Thank you for considering this look up.

Kind regards,

Laura

Hello hwlambert and Merlin,

I obtained three related files last year from this Index.

The information in my records was quite comprehensive and includes such details as NativePlace, Religion, Date and where convicted, sentence, Previous history, State of Health, Condition on admission, Previous history, General remarks and more.

As with all old records, there is no guarantee to what volume or details can be contained...just pot luck!

The size of the pdf (6000k) stops me attaching this as an example  :(

I would suggest very useful! I am living outside Australia at present, but organised an agent to visit on behalf. So there are options on obtaining documents if you are not close by.

Best of luck with your research  ;D

Kind regards,

Laura

Hello Wendy and mum mum,

What area were Alfred and Emily living in in the 1890's? Were they close to Townsville/Rockhampton area?

There is a record for an Alfred BAKER in gaol at Stewart's Creek, Townsville in the potential time frame.
Records exist for Emily BAKER from Goodna Asylum
Police Gazettes should mention the warrant for desertion - and maybe a detail like his usual occupation.

All the above would be accessible to you through QLD State Archives if you can visit in person. Alternatively they can be ordered through various genealogists...for a fee  :-\

I have obtained quite a number of Asylum records from NSW State Records in my research. I have found these to be extremely helpful, with lots of information about family connections.

Kind regards,

Laura
