Thanks Ady, I have read the extract from Hanks, very interesting. My grandfather was on the Bellona 1918-1919, so after war ended. He served on Carnarvon from1913-1917.

I have been searching for my grandfather's Royal Marine records & have just accesed them via Fleetairarm museum. He served on HMS Carnarvon & was involved in the battle of the Falklands in 1915. His name is James John Pearce, private although he was promoted to corporal in 1918/19 when he was on the Hood. Does anyone have knowledge about either Carnarvon, Bellona or Hood?

I am looking for information about the parents of James Appleby Cuff 1821-1893 living in Dundry, Somerset, England. I know his father was George Cuff & that James was born in Evercreech, Somerset, England so presume his parents came from there too. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Penilelly

Thanks Casaguidi,
I have tried the RM archive but still no success! I know quite a bit about my ancestors but can't find any official info. about their miltary service. Have decided I must go myself to Kew!
Thanks again

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Don't be deceived - Research isn't always easy!

Hello,
Been reading the site & agree with everything said. My husband & I are each "doing" our own tree. Sometimes he steams ahead & at others it's me. I find that you come to the brick wall & stall sometimes for weeks & then suddenly come across the very person you are searching for. Is it possible that not all information comes up each time you log onto the census or BMD sites?
Does anyone else find this?
Great site, by the way, nice to hear from likeminded people.

Thanks Alan,
It's his service record I don't have & I have tried to access them via Royal Marines Portsmouth but have had no success.
I also visited Deal where his father was stationed in late 1800's & early 1900's but there records have been lost, as have the 1901 census records for Deal!
Have you any more suggestions?
Regards Penilelly

Can anyone help me find info. on my Grandfather, James John Pearce b.1893 in Deal, Kent? His family moved to Bristol probably in 1904. He joined R.M. in WW1. Married Violet Fanny Williams in 1919 in Bristol. I should love to know of any ships he served on.

Thank you Gadget,
I do have their marriage certificate. His father's name was James Pearce. But without a place of birth I cannot find him either! I do know that James was a bookbinder/journeyman.
