Elspet Raeburn/Riddoch is not a name I recognise and isn't (as far as I know part of my Raeburn family).  Alanzed.

Thanks for the reply, and Happy New Year to you to.  I would be delighted to have a photo of James Wood and Jane Davidson.  Its very interesting that it is taken by William Clark the photographer.  I assume you know, but William Clarke's wife (Christian Newlands Logie) is part of our family too.  Christian Newlands Logie (1880-1958) was the daughter of Alexander Logie (1852-1918) and Elizabeth Davidson (1853-1918).  William and Chrisitian Clark emigrated to California about 1926.

This Elizabeth Davidson (Mrs Logie) was the daughter of George Davidson (1820-1894) and his first wife, Elizabeth Gray (1825-1857). She was also the half-sister of my great-grandfather George Davidson (1860-1945).   George (1820-1894) was the brother of Jane Davidson who married James Wood. (1826-1904).

I'll reply to your PM with more details.

Jim (extattiehowker)

I've just been reading through this string of messages - and have recently been in touch with Karen Wakefield re some connections between the Munro family and my Brown ancestors from Fordyce.   (My gr grandmothers sister, Elizabeth Brown, married John Munro, in 1901. He was the son of John Munro and Georgina Ledingham, and grandson of David Munro and Elspet Gibb - all buried in Fordyce).  I was very interested to read in one of your earlier replies about you having a picture of a relatives croft at Braehead, Portessie - and seeing you have Davidson and Wood families that you are interested in, I'm guessing we may be researching the same family.

My 3gr grandparents are Robert Davidson and Jane Burnett.  They lived at Braeheads, Portessie, up to their deaths in the 1850's.  Their only daughter Jane Davidson (1826-1904) married James Wood (1821-1898) in 1852.  He was originally from Sandend, but James and Jane lived on at Braeheads until the 1880's/1890's.  Are these the Davidsons and Woods that you refer to in your families of interest?  Would be very interested to hear if they are and also to hear what you know of Braeheads, Portessie.  Anecdotal family reference passed down to me was that Braeheads, Portessie, was somewhere at the top of the Brae of Peterhythe, close to where Riach the Bakers used to have a bakers about 20-30 years ago.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Karen

I've just skim read the chain of postings about Alexander Morrison and Anne Lobban.

The location of Alexanders birth is "Mosstown" in 1807, the 'M' is quite elongated and makes it look like an "Sh" and the double "s" has the old style long "f" shape to it.  Its located about half a mile to the south west of Brambleburn and Gledshillock.

I too am descended from the Morrison's of Brambleburn.  Alexander's parents, John Morrison and Margaret Donald are my 4 x gr grandparents.

I'm descended from their third son, George Morrison (who married Elspet Bain and also lived at Brambleburn).  Their son Alexander had an illegitimate daughter, Mary, in 1869.  She is my gr-grandmother.  These are the George and Elspet listed at item 3. in lsyd's posting.

I have a file of information on the Morrison family - but not sure if I have more information on Anne Lobban or not.  I seem to remember coming to the same conclusion, (that she died in childbirth) about 20 years ago.  Alexander is clearly a widower in the 1851 census.  I'll look through it to see if I have anything more about her.

I have Alexander's death as 13 Sep 1879 at 21 Warwick Street, Glasgow (Gorbals District) .  He is a farmer, and widower of Ann Lobban. James Morrison his son, registers the death.  See Gorbals District deaths 1879 entry 623.

I was born and brought up beside Grange, though now live in London, but return there regularly.  Very happy to share information.  Look forward to hearing from you.

Alan.

Not sure how these fit into the families you have been looking at... but.... there are 3 closely sited gravestone for Peterkins in the Old Churchyard in Fordyce.  They read:

"Erected by Elizabeth G Nicol, in memory of her husband John Peterkin, Merchant in Cullen, one of Bailies of the Burgh and 1st Lieutenant 5th Banffshire Volunteer Artillery; born 25 June 1839, died 21 June 1871; and of the above Elizabeth G Nicol, who died at Burnside, Fordyce, on 28 January 1905 aged 70 years."

"Erected by Alexander Peterkin, Farmer in Skeith, to the memory of his father John Peterkin, later Farmer there, who died on the 22nd December 1820 agred 55 years.  Also of his brother James Peterkin, who died the 26th July the same year aged 7 years.  Likewise in memory of the above mentioned Alexander Peterkin who died at Dytach the 11th September 1810 aged 31 years."

"Erected to the memory of John Peterkin, 18 Feb 1803 and Mary Lumsden Peterkin, his wife, 7 March 1795."

Not located beside these ones but presumably connected (because of the Burnside link) there is:

"Erected by family in loving memory of their father John Allan, Burnside, Fordyce, who died 11 December 1911 in his 90th year.  Also their unlce Goerge who died at Little Gight, Fyvie, in 1877 aged 52 years.  Also their brother Alexander who died at Singapore 9 July 1901 aged 46 years.  Also their brother James who died 1 November 1911 aged 48 years and his wife Annie Jane Bremner who died 7 May 1905 aged 37 years.  Also their brother John who died at Chilliwack, B.C. 19 February 1918 aged 60 years and their mother Ann Peterking who died 9 July 1918 agred 83 years. "

The only other Peterkin reference in Fordyce Old Churchyard is:

"Erected by William Wilson, Feuar, Portknockie, in memory of his son James Geddes Wilson, who died 1 May 1869 aged 24 years.  Also of his grand-daughter Margaret Ann Peterkin, who died 4 August 1972 aged 2 years.  The above William Wilson died 2 November 1873 aged 68 years and Elizabeth Gray his wife 2 Oct 1873 aged 68 years.  Also of his daughter Elizabeth Wilson, wife of James Fordyce who died 7 June 1924 aged 76 years. Deeply regretted. "

Although no longer in existence there was another Peterkin stone which was trascribed in 1886.  At that time it read:

"In memory of James Wilkie, sometime in Barnyard, who departed this life 17 march 1749, and Isabel Peterkin his spouse who departed this life 23 March 1718.  This stone was erected by james Wilkie in Dytach, Capt. Alexander Wilkie and William Wilkie in Barnyards, their sons.  This is the burial place of them and their posterity. "

Hope some of this is some help.  I have photos of the gravestones.  If you want to see them let me know an e-amil address to send them to.

Just spotted that there is also an Addison reference in a grave inscription in the New Cemetery at Fordyce.

"In loving memory of William Hendry, Famrer and Tea-planter,  who died at Cairnton, 27 May 1921 aged 65 years and his wife Hannah Clark who died at Aird House, Portsoy, 5 March 1941 aged 83 years.  Also their son-in-law James Addison, Farmer, Auchip, who died 23 April 1945 aged 57 years, and his wife Charlotte Hendry who died 23 January 1961 aged 69 years."

I have confirmed that this James Addison is another son of William and Jane Wright, mentioned in my previous posting.

From my own family tree I know that William Addison and Jane Wright had another son, William A Addison (bn about 1882).  He married, on 27 Nov 1914 Jessie Ann Fraser (1888-1923).  This Jessie Ann Fraser is part of my own family tree: she is a second cousin of my grandfather (referred to earlier).  She died after only 8 years of marriage, but they had three daughters.... whose details I have.

I've also just spotted (on my own tree) that I know William Addison (who married Jane Wright) is in fact a son of Joseph and Addison and Janet Coull.  I have a copy of his death certificate (14 Dec 1921) which confirms this.)

I'd be interested to hear your connection to this Addison family.

Hi Ziggie

Joseph and Janet Addison are buried in the old churchyard in the centre of the village of Fordyce.

Their gravestone inscription reads

"In memory of Joseph Addison, Farmer, Summerton, who died there on 20 June 1877 aged 74 years.   Also of his infant daughter Anne, and Alexander C Addison, Student of Divinity and missionary at Wishaw, who died there on 4 May 1876 aged 29 years.  Also of his beloved wife Janet Coull who died 1 February 1888 aged 78 years. "

The immediately neighbouring stone to the north of Joseph and Janet's gravestone is also an Addison stone - which generally indicates some connection between the two families.  It reads:

"Erected by William Addison, Farmer, Auchip, in loving memory of his wife Jane Wright who died 4 March 1915 aged 66 years.  Also of his daughter-in-law Christina Horn died 27 May 1899 aged 20 years.  The said William Addison who died at Auchip on 16 December 1921 aged 74 years.  Also his youngest son Alex. John, tea-planter, Ceylon, who died at Colombo on 5 April 1936 aged 43 years."

My guess would be that William (who married Jane Wright) is a son of Joseph and Janet - but its only a guess.

I have photographs of these gravestones.  If you would like a copy let me know your e-mail address and I'll forward them on to you.

Incidentally, Alex. John (1893-1936), who died in Ceylon, was a friend of my grandfather, (who was brought up on a neigbouring farm to Auchip) and who was also in Ceylon for a period of time around the first world war. I think  I may have a picture of Alex John somewhere if you were interested.

Sarah/Alvagirl

Just reading Alvagirls response too and looking at John Mantoch's death registration in 1889 at Rothes I see he is recorded as the son of Peter Mantach and Jane Insch.

I suspect this may be an error in the christian name.... and that it could be James Mantoch and Jane Insch (ref my earlier response).  If John was born in 1816 it would fit in with the other info I haveL  James Mantoch married Jane Inch in Rothes in 1813 and have the following children recorded:

Ann 1813
James 1819
George 1822
Peter 1825
William 1828
Jane 1830
Alexander 1834

The 6 year gap 1813 to 1819 always struck me as having an unrecorded birth - and it now seems clear to be John in 1816.

Would be very interested to hear more from you on your connections too Alvagirl.  Looks like a definite link here.

Hi Sarah

Just browsing the old listing on Moaryshire list here and spotted your interest in Mantach's/Mantochs etc.

My 6gr grandparents are James Mantoch (bn 1741 Rothes) and Jane Simpson. Their daughter Elizabeth (bn 1770 in Rothes) married James Benzies in 1794 ... and their son James (bn Rothes 1775) married Jane Inch in 1813

Are you still researching Mantach's?  Likelihood of a connection with the Garmouth people you go back to seems fairly high.... I would have thought.

Happy to share information and see if we can develop the Mantoch connections back at that time.
