may I refer you to www.graham-bailey.com/family_tree for Goult/Gault/Gaut. This appears to be a seriously researched website which has led me back 12 generations to my direct ancestor John Gault b.1569 Dalham, Suffolk. let me know how you get on!

I''ve reluctantly given up on this - as I've already said, my post here was a shot in the dark

I now have strong (but not conclusive) evidence that John Gault born Bardwell, Suffolk, 1794, is my man, thanks

thanks, aghadowey - I know nothing about James & Jane pre-1831 & my posting is a bit of shot in the dark in the vague hope that somebody on Rootschat has some info. I can add that they were Catholic (no surprise there).

James (1778-1854) & Jane (1801-76) moved to England (London) sometime before c.1830 (Daniel b.1831 Kensington). Census has them living in the East End, James as a "painter" & Jane from "Cork". They died in the East End (Jane in Stepney Workhouse). Any information on their life pre-1830 (e.g. marriage) would be appreciated. They are my ggg-grandparents.

thanks for the advice, Rick. I travel to Suffolk almost every month so it's no bother for me to pop into SRO in Bury St Eds. My analysis of the 1841 census revealed that West Suffolk contained nearly 40% of all the Goults at that time, with Norfolk/Cambs/London having most of the remainder. Those in Suffolk were confined to just a few parishes (especially Gazeley) (lucky for my further research of the late 1700s). Of course, if somebody on Rootschat has already done the legwork then I'd be delighted to hear from them.

my research at SRO reveals John Goult died in Norton in 1831 aged 37 giving a birth of c.1794. Are there any known John Goults born c.1794?  (Goult is a Suffolk surname but I'm not entirely discounting adjacent counties)

Suffolk / John GOULT, lived in Norton from c.1818

John Goult (an illiterate labourer) married Maria Jennings in Althorne, Essex, on 4 Nov 1818.
The family lived in Norton, Suffolk (most of the children were born there, & on 1841 census (but not John)). Although I know all about Maria (and her ancestors) and the children, I know nothing else about John.
Can't find him on any census or BMD or IGI.
Most of the family are living in London by 1851 census). I'm guessing John moved to London and died there c.1842-1851).
Can anybody enlighten me on his birth, death, ancestors, anything?
many thanks
