The Lighter Side / Re: Bygone sounds

Can't resist writing here again, but keep it brief this time. :)
VE and VJ night 1945, joyful chorus of songs with our parents and neighbours standing around a huge bonfire, middle of 'circle' down the road. (For tradesmen's horses & carts to turn round). Magic moments.

We have so many remembered sounds and hope 3 isn't too many?  :)
When attending the infant's school together 1941-3 a German Plane flew over and the teacher's whistles all blew at the same time, while us children scurried down to the air-raid shelters.
Also during WW2 we could hear Steam Hammers forging Anchors for Warships, the same ones had made them for HMS Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary and The Titanic.
A vivid one my wife has when a child, a large piece of hot shrapnel from 'friendly' anti-aircraft guns near where we lived came crashing through her neighbour's roof.
It landed on the baby's cot, but she had begun to cry so much her Mum had taken her to their own bed just before.  And apparently, she rarely ever cried at night!
The house is still there with it's repaired roof, but not the baby as she is a Grandmother now.  ;D  We are still in touch with her by the way.

Technical Help / Scanner software downloads
« on: Tuesday 19 May 09 22:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi, can anyone recommend easy to use scanner software to download please. Hubby is teaching me to use the scanner, but two of my friends are interested and they have different software to ours.
Also a distant friend from the 'good old Black Country' would like to join in, so think it's best if we all have the same program to learn from.  Are there any easy to use Freebies available, now that would be really nice. :)

The Lighter Side / Re: Why don't GR just leave things alone?

Same here Judy, think the full 'ancestral' membership is very good and also enjoy browsing for names in our own, not quite so ancient age group. ;) Recently made contact with members researching families where we used to live, very pleased.

The Lighter Side / Re: How Many?

My G. uncle John Hill and G. aunt Theresa (nee Martin) born 1879, married in West Brom then moved to Newport, Monmouthshire and had 10 children.. John, Ethel, Florence, Francis, Stephen, Olive, Joseph, Arthur, Leonard and Martha.
On a weeks visit there, my parents said at a family gathering there were about a dozen persons sitting around the large, white-scrubbed table. G. aunt Theresa always said a little Prayer before every meal 'For what we are about to receive' etc, and another one after 'For what we have received' etc.
Mum used to say she rather mumbled it though, then whispered something even more difficult to hear which thought may have been - Dear Lord, please don't let me have any more children! ;D

Dorset / Re: CHRISTOPHER family
« on: Saturday 25 April 09 09:58 BST (UK)  »
Hello Robb,
Regarding your Christopher research we think a family near us in Dorset could be related, as know they have a Newman connection mentioned.
My wife just sees them occasionally whilst shopping, but we could drop a little note through the door of their home if you think may be a good idea? Also know of a long-established Cutler family living not too far away, I used to do work for them one time.
Just a thought.

The Lighter Side / Re: How did you find Rootschat?
« on: Friday 24 April 09 15:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi, we were in a good website which closed unfortunately but over the months members & friends have been saying, they've joined Rootschat. Can't mention who they are of course ;) but thought why not join the party.
Already been welcomed by the way, seems there's a lot of nice friendly and helpful people on here. :)

Very nice sentiment IgorStrav. :) We've just a small bungalow in Dorset but usually manage to accommodate visitors from a previous 'family friendly' website, which closed unfortunately.

Staffordshire / Re: Black Country (Bilston) Friends and Neighbours - more names

Yes we had the Bilston book from Paper Mill recently. Very interesting, haven't found any of my family in there yet though. :)
Hi Tony55, noticed you have a Tranter of Birmingham in your tree. I was a Patternmaker there with a Malcome Tranter early 1950's.
