Berkshire / Re: Lovejoy family of Reading

Lovejoys are complicated by using aliases.  I descend from a Matthias Lovejoy, otherwise Matthias Matthews, Brewer of Reading. There is a book which may be useful: . "John Loveday of
Caversham, 1711-1789" by Sarah Markham.  I've not seen it.  I know next to nothing of the Matthews, or Lovejoys.

Dear Jan,
The details you give of James Wallace fit mine (1767 -1842 Bathgate), but the rest doesn't! ..Although there are connections with Canada. One of his sons, John Wallace (1820 -1900. m Margaret Sellar) emigrated in the 1870s.  I've always been aware of Wallaces in Ayrshire, but as far as I know they're pretty unrelated to Bathgate (or Dundee, where I have maternal Wallaces)
I am also fascinated by the spread of people. The Ross in my name comes from Easter Ross and the Ross clan, my ancestors being part of the movements associated with the Highland Clearances.

This James Wallace was b.1767 (21 April). He died 9 Nov 1842.  He was my 3x great grandfather.
If you require more info, do get in touch.

Herefordshire / Re: Anyone looking for Burden in Ledbury?

Philip Henry Burden married Mary Jones in 1850.  They went to South Australia. Mary remarried John Henry Barrow a congregational minister (which fits the 'independent' idea)

Angus (Forfarshire) / Re: Brown of Montrose 1745 / Shipbuilders
« on: Monday 16 June 14 21:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Your Browns are my Browns. I am descended from Jean Craigie Brown.  I have done a fair amount of family history and knew that James B went to Australia where he continued shipbuilding or repairing..  But I'd love to know more precisely.  His children made the original tracing of the Browns easier since their middle names were the surnames of the various spouses of James's sisters.
I have a certain amount about the shipbuilding business. Also what happened to William Barclay. And some wills inc John Brown d1852. ..By the way I have this John Brown born in Craig (a couple of miles from Montrose), not n Montrose.
Yours
Ross Wallace
