I had returned to my research after a few years break and came across your post. Sorry about the very late reply!

The Samuel Foley who moved to N. Zealand is the son of Edward Foley & Rebecca Reeves.

My great-grandfather Samuel Foley (b. 1888 d. 1934) lived his whole life in West Brom and is the g-son of Edward & Rebecca (his father was their 8th child George Foley b. abt 1861). Understandable confusion with all these Foleys!

Yes our family is still in the West Mids, my g-grandf. Samuel had 9 kids, unfortunately only one is still alive now.

Regarding Edward (b. 1818 Dudley) & Rebecca Reeves (b. 1821 Foleshill) my findings are:

I don't know if you're still searching for Edward Foley as your post is 3 years old now, but I am a direct descendant of Edward Foley. He was my Great-Great-Great-Grandfather.

There are still quite a few Foleys in West Bromwich, and in fact a distant cousin of mine on the Foley side is still in the Canal barge business.

In 1861 Edward was on a barge in Cheadle, Staffordshire called "The Rifle Man", his wife Rebecca (nee Reeves) is not with him at this time, but he has four of the children with him (Eliza, Emma, Phoebe and Joseph). I believe Rebecca was not with him at this time as my Great-Great Grandfather (George) was born around this time. My Great-Grandfather was Samuel Foley, who died aged 46. Three of Samuel's children are still alive, including my Grandmother.

I am still researching and haven't gone back to 1851 but will post again when I have more information.

Just out of interest, what is your connection with the Foleys?
