Berwickshire / Coldstream - Death records
« on: Friday 24 July 09 10:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I've got two death records from Coldtsream records, which have been taken from the ScotsPeople website.

One is Elisabeth Ewan (died 1814), and the second James Ewen (died 1850).  Just after a bit of info regarding the numbers etc. that appear on these.

On James' record there seems to be 3 columns, one showing the age at death and 2 others.  On Elisabeth's record there appears to be no record of age but then monetary columns recording a fee???? In brackets next to Elisabeth's name is "poor", which I assume means no fee required?!?!

Any help appreciated. I can email the records through if anyone requires a better look.

thanks
Mark

Durham / James Ewen - Wizard
« on: Monday 27 April 09 12:00 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching our family tree and have got back to James Ewen b. 1832 / 1831 in coldstream. I have come across a record of him on the 1861 census living in Durham with wife Sarah. His occupation is listed as Wizard(?!?!). Just wondered in anyone could shed any light on what Wizard refers to? Back in 1861 was this an official job title?!?!? or was one of my distant relatives simply having a bit of fun with the person carrying out the census!!

Any help appreciated.

Rgds

Berwickshire / Burial Details - Lennel / Coldstream
« on: Thursday 23 October 08 21:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I'm trying to find any information on the surname EWEN (or Ewan, Ewing, McEwen) that may have died in / around Coldstream or is buried in Lennel cemetry.

I have visited Lennel previously and had a quick scout around but to no avail (limited timescale due to screaming kids in the car!!) so any help would be appreciated.

The time period I'm interested in is 1840 - 1860.

Many Thanks

Fife / Re: Fife death lookup pre 1855 please

Thanks Diddy, I'd tried to previosuly get the death date but to no avail so this is a big help.

The other information you provided corresponds with dates / names already in the "tree" and acts as a nice check.

More of a general question........was it typical for Christening dates to be delayed by 3/4 years after birth? Going off the christening and death dates this would make James 69 yrs rather than 73 yrs.

Final question.. is there any records of a death date for Catharine Ewen (James' wife - originally McVity Deans). Catharine was also in the 1851 census, aged 68ish I think.

Thanks

Hi All

I'm trying to find the death date along with any other available info of James Ewen b. Sprouston, Roxburgh. He last appeared on the 1851 census aged 72 (Address: Boofies Brae, Dunfermiline Fife).

May have been known as Ewan or Ewing.

Any help greatly appreciated, many thanks

Hi Beckey

Thanks again. Really useful info.

I have Mary Ewing christened 5/9/1781 so this seems to pretty much tie in with her been 66.

Didn't have any info on Andrew so seeing if I can find anything now.

Thanks
Mark

Hi all

Thanks for the quick responses.

Monica - yes this corresponds with the records that I have. After 1851, James Ewen 19 yrs (my Great Great Grandad) moved to Durham and then finalyl settled in Newcastle (died 1908).

Beckey - records also match - although I have Ewan in 1841 rather than Ewson. Jas and Mary were married in Edinburgh. It would appear as though Jas died quite young.

The family seem to originate from Sprouston - where the name is listed as Ewine, Ewing or Ewan

I'd be interested in finding out whether there is a link with the "priest" Mr McEwen - not sure of the best line of enquiry on this?

Any help appreciated

Thanks
Mark

Hello

I'm researching family history and have traced some of our ancestors back to Coldstream, living in the area circa 1800 to 1850.

Census records for 1841 show a James Ewen (aged 30) and family living in Coldstream. James Ewens job is listed as tailor.

James Ewens father, also named James and also a tailor, is shown to be married in Coldstream in 1815 to a Catherine McVity.

I've looked on the Coldstream website (www.coldstream-scotland.co.uk) and note that reference is made to a Mr McEwen (a local tailor - on the website spelt Taylor) who used to conduct marriages in Coldstream as a "priest".

I just wondered whether anyone had any additional information on Mr McEwen (first name, approx. time he lived in Coldstream etc), or knew where the reference on the website may have come from. It may be a bit of a long shot but older family members often comment that there used to be a "Mc" at the start of the Ewen and the fact he was a tailor falls in line with the family trade at the time.

I'm thinking someone may have spotted it on any "irregular" marriage records - or perhaps someone could let me know where I would be able to view such records. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks
Mark
