Lancashire / Re: Lost Jones family – Liverpool – needles and haystacks….

Hi - newbie here.

Have a Matilda Jones from Ireland b. 1862 who married a George May of Lancashire. She moved and settled in Lancashire.(Oldham).  Yes, I know it's all needles and haystacks, but if our Jones cross (from Ireland) to your part of the world (and you never know) will share what I find. Perhaps your Jones were from Ireland too???

Good luck to all of us.

Ah, hello!- got a similar problem. My "Matilda Jones" from unknown region in Ireland moved with her husband (british soldier) from Ireland to Lancashire. I know she worked in the mills (with her husband and children) in Lancashire. I mainly would like to know where she came from in Ireland.

Any pointers on where I can find lists of Lancashire men who registered with the army and went to Ireland around 1880?

thankyou .

PS: my husband is from the Thomas family. If you are related to the John Thomas line (the one who went to america in 1642) we have some info on that- the battlesex Jones....but ofcourse that's been well documented and should be easy to find.

hello all,
I am new to this forum, and just running around reading etc.

Lol.
Well you guessed it. I am looking for Jones too.
Except my Jones (where I am up to) is from Ireland. Matilda Jones b. 1862 who married an English soldier (Lancashire) George May.

Anyone have any idea where I can start to locate Irish Jones's? I have an idea they were from the north based on family stories, but ofcourse it's not definite.

thankyou in advance.
Matilda (yes I took the name as my handle). :)

Family History Beginners Board / JONES family of Ireland

Hello everyone.

I've been bumbling and stumbling to trace my ancestors. on some parts of my family I've met with some success (thanks mainly to the research of others really). There's one sector of the family I am stumped on.

It's on my mothers side. My great grandmother was a "Matilda May"- she was married to an Ernest Fox. She was born in Lancashire England. (Oldham) and worked as a velvet weaver in the mills.

Her mother was Matilda May. Matilda (senior) was married to a George May. (He was born in Lancashire too.) He was a soldier in Ireland at some point, where he met my great great grandmother.  They had two children in Ireland: Eliza Jane, and Carrie. They then had two more children in Lancashire England: a son (who died at three years old), followed by my great grandmother Matilda mentioned above.

The problem is I cannot find where my great great grandmother Matilda comes from. Her maiden name was Jones (of all names! ::)).

She was born in 1861. She met and married George May in Ireland, they had their first two children there, and then relocated to Oldham Lancashire by 1891 (where they are on the census.) She is also on the 1901 census in Lancashire. (I haven't found her death records there though.)

I mainly would like to find out where Matilda Jones came from in Ireland. I imagine there must be an army register with George May listed somewhere which might give me a clue.

Any suggestions?

thankyou very much in advance.

Matilda

(PS: I know she marked my great grandmother's birth certificate with an "x" so I am guessing she was illiterate. This might mean she came from a rural area? I know that's a stab in the dark, but I am a bit desparate at this point.)
