That has been my experience as well....especially as we move into the 20th C. Maybe a day or two but not months.

Thanks for the pointer to the tree but I had already spotted this and similarly been unable to find any supporting data. I have contacted the tree owner but no reply.

....and i have found another newspaper article and court case relating to an unreported still birth!

Good idea. As I was writing the above that did come to mind as, if Harriett was the one who notified the death, it might move her chronology forward a bit.

I have also searched emigration records as he had siblings in both Australia and South Africa but one of my wife's Aunts remembers her in Surbiton in the 40s or 50s

Just to be clear I have her full history up until 1939, Its a DEATH I am missing
