Thanks for your reply Louisa.

Since posting I noticed there was a marriage for a Margaret Rebecca Cole in Southend in 1956. Thinking this was unlikely to be just a coincidence i purchased the certificate - turns out that in August 1956 she remarries James Joseph Cole after their marriage was dissolved in January of that year. Her maiden name was Edwards and I confirmed Edward was her nephew.

I'd love to find out more about the cafe does anyone know if Leigh Electoral Rolls or trade directories are available on line?

Regards
John

Essex / Help finding a property in Leigh on Sea please

Hi everyone

I’m wondering if anyone can help to solve a mystery?

William Henry Hollis died in 1952 at 1031 London Rd Leigh on Sea . I have a copy of the probate which shows he left his money to a Margaret Rebecca Cole and Edward James Shrubb.

Family legend has it that when William’s wife died (1947) he ran off with his next door neighbour to  run a café causing a great deal of upset.

I’ve established that William and Margaret were indeed neighbours in London for many years and I am currently working on the assumption that Edward is Margaret’s nephew (although there are other possibilities :-) )

I’m trying to find out the name of the café and where it was. I’ve checked Google street view and the London Rd property appears to be a semi-detached house although I assume the café would be local.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to progress this? I was wondering if there may be trade directories for late 1940’s early 1950’s for this area?

Many thanks
John

Hi all

Thought I would update you on my search for the elusive Eliza Knowlan/Nichols/Preece.

Well the reason I couldn't find her grave was that she was buried at sea!

I had noted some time ago that in a register of burials at sea there was an Eliza Knowlan who died 11 Aug 1887 of apoplexy on board the Arizona, but the age stated was only 42 ('my Eliza' was at least 55) and there were no other details d that would confirm it was her. However, thanks to the new on-line National Newspaper Archive, I tracked down an article in the Northampton Mercury dated 29 Oct 1887 entitled 'The Burial of a Northamptonian at Sea' which proves it was her.

She was returning from New York, and on the leg between Queenstown (Ireland) and Liverpool was 'found dead in her berth at 3:15 am' and 'at 5:30 am was put overboard'!  The ship was then 13.5 hours into the run to Liverpool a journey that would usually take 15 or 16 hours.

The reason given was that 'she was a steerage passenger and her friends were ill able to bear the expense of the funeral'  However her husband says there were £2 16s 8d found in her purse and £21 in her bank book.

I must admit I felt a little sad reading this and wondered whether there may infact have been 'foul play'.

Should there be a death certificate for her? I couldn't see one on free BMD.

Still looking for her marriage - Eliza Preece to William Nichols circa 1850 ! :-)

Happy New Year!

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Adderbury Banns Help please
« on: Tuesday 08 November 11 12:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

I'm wondering if some kind sole could check the Banns associated with the following Adderbury marriage please.

24 June 1811 George Nichols otp and Ann Butler same parish witnesses John Butler and Mary Butler. (details from transcript by OFHS)

I've actually been looking for a marriage between George Nichols and Ann DEAN -in Bodicote without success but this marriage seems to be of the right time and area.

I'm hoping that maybe the bride's surname was confused with those of the witnesses in the marriage register?

Probably clutching at straws again

Many thanks

Hi Smokey1921957

I'm afraid I only know of the family in the Olney area but if I do find any Norfolk connections I'll let you know.

Northamptonshire / Clicker

I guess if, like me, you have ancestors from the Northampton area, then it's likely someone was involved in the shoe trade. I have several 'clickers' in my lot but didn't really appreciate what a hard life it was.

I found the following in a copy of The Rate Payer dated Dec 1886 in Northampton Central Library...

The Clicker written by C Lory

A Clicker when he starts his life,
He’s as happy as can be;
No thought of care comes in his mind,
He’s jovial, gay and free.

But later on the trouble comes,
When he wants better pay;
He is stood aside for someone else,
The school-board of today.

Now what to do he does not know,
To earn his daily bread;
He sees the river dark and cold,
And wishes he were dead.

Careworn, hungry, on he goes,
At last a thought it strikes him;
To enter in another trade,
That thought somewhat revives him.

But the tradesmen sigh and turn their backs,
For they see his clothes threadbare;
And tell him he may call again,
Or seek his fortunes elsewhere.

They little think of those at home,
The poor man has to keep;
With sinking heart and broken frame,
He’s turned out in the street.
