« on: Tuesday 04 May 10 11:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi There cousin Jim.
Well, Well Jim. I can't believe your were writing your post & here I am in the chat room. :)  on Saturday night. I tracked you down through the other 2 family trees, & your trying to find me here. How lucky are you, having success immediately & I've been searching for years, for our family. I obviously was in the wrong area.  I have not been in the chat room very often lately & not checked the posts to often so I missed you. The Davie's are an elusive lot. LOL
This is a great site, they are so knowledgeable & don't hesitate to give assistance. They are so quick with the information, I have received assistance a few times & also have helped some who live in Canada find their living Relos.  I have had only one bad experience. I had a lovely visit here from A UK chatter & her family. who was a Scot last year.
Thank you to all of you who gave assistance to cousin Jim. :-* :-* There was only a couple of things wrong in the info. "GOOD WORK" I pat you all on the back. Gold stars to you all.
Thank you Jim for the family info, I'll be in touch Soon.
Best regards,  Phyllis, "Huntersjoy"   :D

Lanarkshire / Re: seeking John (Jackie) Murphy decendants of Glasgow Scotland
« on: Thursday 18 February 10 05:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Frances,
I'm just amazed that your sister is able to remember conversations with my grandmother as if it was yesterday.   Hopefully you and your sister may be able to clear up some conflicting information I have on my Murphy's.
I do believe it was recently proved that ballroom dancing assists in agility & mobility  & helps keep the brain young. Good on your sister. I only hope I will  survive to the ripe old  age of 85.
I have found this site very helpful & have had assistance with some    RC's ( Roots Chatters)  that assisted me in locating my Murphy Grandparents Death certificates & also my baby Sister's death cert.  I had been searching a couple of years. The  Murphy name is so common,I didn't realise that Jack stood for John either & of course I didn't know the geography.  I managed to find cousin Jackie through his parents, Jack & Margaret's death certificates.Cousin Jack was the informant so I took a chance & wrote to the address on the cert. Cousin Jack was very surprised when I contacted him. Apparently we played as children in Crianlarich.
I just can't believe I'm talking to my grandparents neighbours.  :o WOW WOW  A few tears are falling :'(    :'(
Bye for now TC   Phyllis

Hello Dolly58,
I'm so surprised & happy that you have got in touch with me. As you can imagine, I'm so anxious to know about my grandparents & their lives. I found my first cousin Jack, son of Margaret & Jack. Unfortunately with cousin Jack being so young when my grandparents passed on, he is unable to tell me much. I was surprised to find out through cousin Jack, that we have a half cousin, Jack, a Dentist.  Which is the son of Grandfather Jack's first son Jack. It has been so confusing with them all named Jack.
I would also like to know about my mothers young life in Glasgow.I I would love to have an insight to life in Glasgow at that time.
There is so much I would like to ask you.
I'd be grateful if you could   PM me & we could exchange email address's.
Sincerely, Phyllis :)    :-*

The Lighter Side / Re: How is your life like your ancestors?
« on: Tuesday 09 February 10 11:49 GMT (UK)  »
While doing my Ancestry I was surprised to find, on my mothers side which is Irish. Her father was a Master Tailor. I'm  self taught & sew most of my clothes & other bits & pieces.
Mums mother, my grandmother,  had & died from Asthma & my youngest grandaughter suffers from Asthma. We all wondered where it came from. Grandmothers death certificate cleared  up that mystery.  Doctors always asked my daughter if anyone in the family sufferers from Asthma,we didn't know,  now she can say yes. Grandmother was also an epileptic. My half sister also suffers from epilepsy & my first cousin.
Grandmothers mother was a weaver. My craft is to spin all types of fibre, also dye fibre & knit. So I would be able to spin the fibre GGrandmother would weave.
Her mother, GGgrandmother, was a teacher in Rosemont Barracks. I'm not a teacher, but I'm a coach in my sport of Dragon boating. Its a little bit  similar.
I've also found that depression & the curse of alcohol has been passed down through the male side.
I don't know much about my fathers side.
I do know my strength, tenacity, & persistence comes from my ancestors.Don't want to think about my weakness's LOL.
Cheers, Phyllis

Stirlingshire / Re: Hollywoods
« on: Thursday 21 January 10 11:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Larky.
My Grandmother was Frances Mabel Hollywood who married John Murphy.
Both were from Ireland & both died in Glasgow Scotland.
I have looked in my tree for John Hollywood & Helen Hollywood, unfortunately there not there. If you have any other names & information I could check  to see if their in my tree.  The furthest I go back to is my GGGrandfather abt 1842 Belfast Ireland.  Maybe Helen or John could be a branch off my Hollywoods.
I'm happy to share information with you if I have your Hollywoods in my tree.
Cheers, Phyllis

Occupation Interests / Re: Tailors' earnings?
« on: Wednesday 06 January 10 10:59 GMT (UK)  »
My Irish grandfather living in Royston Road Glasgow was a master tailor & according to my 1st cousin who remembers says he wasn't well off. Living was hard & food was scarce. People who remember Grandad Murphy say he was an excellent Tailor. Looking back on my Grandparents pictures wearing the clothes he made they were very smart. He was a cripple with TB in one leg.  He  would sit on the floor or table to do his work. Mum told me that he would make her a dress & matching coat out of second hand material also her brothers clothes out of hand me downs. Scraps of material were precious. :)
I seem to have followed him in that I also sew my own clothing & grandchildren. He passed it down in his genes. God Bless Grandad.  :-*
Cheers, Phyllis    :)

Hi all,
SS Asturias is also a part of my history. I arrived in Sydney in April 1951, with my parents & brother.
Thank you to Rover for the web site. I will enjoy browseing through it. I could never find a picture of Asturias. Now I have one. Dad did tell me she was scraped after our voyage. How sad.
I do have a photo of dad, me & my little brother wearing his kilt standing on the deck.
Cheers, Phyllis    :)
