Herbert was in the army from what I recall. Cant think that he would have been involved any other way. If you have access try the army service records in the meantime?

Hi, well I'm about and logged in OK. I havent worked on this for years and can't remember a thing. My stuff is all archived and I had a hard drive dump my back ups so would have to start over from paper records. PPM me in about 6 weeks when I MAY be able to dig it all out from storage (house move coming up)

Thanks David for the extra information.

Your 1927 copy sounds very interesting if a little while itself from an event..I wonder why someone was looking then? Genealogy or fortune seeking? Or were they copying damaged records?

I havent been tracing this line any further due to 2 reasons. It is my son-in-laws, so something I was doing out of interest, seeing what I could glean for free, and not really prepared to spend a lot of money on. I also had a huge computer melt down and my files are in such a mess, some corrupted some ok, its almost better to start everything again and cross reference, rather than spend hours trying to regroup. (Back up hard drive failed to start when reaccessed) have learnt the hard way that 2 back ups are essential. PM me if you want to.

For what it's worth Grieg, the Norwegian composer, was of Scottish descent, the spelling of the family name being changed from the Scottish original.

It is worth...I thought it was one way traffic!

Pronounciation well.....Greeg as in Grieg the Norwegian composer but Tamsin Grieg the actress is pronounced Gregg isnt she?

Then you can start looking for them as Gregg because the people collecting the census data didnt always get it write either and transcribers must put what they see.

As a middle name it shouldnt be too much trouble, but as you expect it to come from a family name later it may then.

There seem to be a nice lot up in Scotland,

....perhaps came over from Norway?

Florence marrying Frederick BIRCH, which she did in 1928?

In the interests of thoroughness it might be worth your getting a copy of the 1920 CHELL/PIPKIN marriage cert

First point drat! Forgot Birch could have been the Fred. Too focussed on AlFred.Yes I really do have to have a look at that but its very unlikely.

Second, how would that marriage cert help?

Assuming for a minute that he is illegitimate I think I read somewhere that the government had a drive for a new bastardy law or similar to get soldiers to live up to their responsibilities so the tax payer wasnt funding soldiers indiscretions. Women were encouraged to bring actions and get finance and it went on service the record? Alfred John married or not, could still be in the frame

Anybody got any ideas if I am able to trace that any way, of course its again unlikely. I cant see women wanting to be further humiliated in that day and age, easier to pretend they were married and widowed in the midst of a war.

Thanks avm228 for filling CaroleW in, I didnt think all that was pertinent here so reposted to try and gain clarity without the link, so as not to encourage people wade thru it all in case they lost interest.

Thank you too for eliminating that as a marriage possibility avm 228! You very modestly have not mentioned that it was your genius move that found his birth under Shell.

I fully understand the maiden name at the Dover marriage indicates no previous marriage. And was happy with that for 2.5 years. However someone has turned up a wedding photo of that era marked "Flo and Fred" (before they started doing clothes for a supermarket!). I havent got my mitts on a copy yet and am unlikely to do so. Flo and Alf would have been a bit more convincing but I thought it was worth revisiting.

I cant prove a marriage didnt take place, only that it did.  I try to be thorough.

If I turn up any ideas, I will be looking for a marriage for a while yet.

No stone unturned.

No baptism of a George Colebrooke their first, 5 years either side of 1834, using soundex on freereg having searched all counties.

Only 3 colebrookes noted within those dates 2 in Somt and one in wales, but doesnt look like family of origin or procreation in any of them.
