Gillian,
I see that you are interested in the Parker family of Soulby.
Does this include William Parker?
I have a business letter that he wrote in 1848.
I would be pleased to send you a transcript if it is of any interest.

BurscoughLad - thanks to the information in your postings you have helped me to identify the history of an old postcard. It is printed with a rhyme entitled "A Happy New Year to all from Lathom Park".
It ends with the lines -

"So a happy New Year to everyone,
Is the wish of every heart,
Of the Remount boys of the A.S.C.
In their camp at Lathom Park."

The poet signs himself A.H.
It was printed by Hutton of Ormskirk.

Dumfriesshire / Re: John Weild - has anyone come across him?

Hi Caroline,
I collect old letters and one of my recent acquisitions is a letter by John Weild to his brother David Weild dated October 1808. In his letter he says that he is going out to the West Indies with a quantity of goods to sell, possibly to the Bahamas or to the Virgin Islands. But the letter contains little genealogical information.

John Rickman sailed with Captain James Cook on his third voyage of discovery (1776-1780). Rickman died in Lymington in 1818 and according to his will, his family comprised
Mary his wife.
Sons John, Robert, George, Tom.
Daughters Sarah (married Henry Jenkins) and Mary.
I hope this helps somebody.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Army Lists 1805-1812

Thanks for explaining the relationship Laura.
Presumably Alicia was a sister to Ann who married Mr C.
I have tried to send you a note via the Personal Message facility.
I do not think that I am able to send any attachments via Rootschat and the letter is 4 f'scap pages long!
Alicia refers to Mr Chalmer being in London and having an interview with Mr Pit, I presume that is the Pit who was Prime Minister at the time?

Hi Laura,
I see that as well as your interest in the Chalmer family you also have an interest in the Gaskells.
I have a letter written in Liverpool in 1797 by Alicia Gaskell to her friend a Mrs Weanwright.
In the letter Alicia mentions Mr Chalmer, who I believe she was staying with.
I can let you have a transcription of the letter if it is of any interest.

AUSTEN family.
I am researching some old letters and have come across one written by Elizabeth Smith AUSTEN at Teignmouth, dated 10th September 1831.
It was sent to John Hopton FORBES, Ely Place, Holborn, London. Judging by the contents of the letter it is possible that FORBES was a solicitor acting on behalf of Miss AUSTEN.
I can transcribe this letter for anybody who is interested.

Michael - I was fascinated to see your reference to Thomas Loggan, Master of the Kingston. I have been searching on-line for him for days.
Loggan (d.1800 aged 60yr) was the son in law of the Newcastle surgeon, Nathaniel Bayles (d. 1791 aged 74yr).
Bayles seems to have had his fingers in lots of pies, including shipping.

A couple of years ago a cache of letters to Nathaniel Bayles from the master of his ship Providence, came to light. Unfortunately most of the collection had been dispersed by the time I came across them. Most of the letters were written by Captain John Ritchie of the Providence.

By the 1780s the Providence had been hired by the navy and become a Transport taking troops over to fight in the war in North America. One letter even refers to Captain Logan of the Kingston which was also out there.

Where does all your information about Loggan come from, as I understand that the "Dictionary of Tyne Sailing Ships" only dates from 1820? Any information about Bayles and his ships would be greatly appreciated.
