The Common Room / Re: Do you have an interesting family tree story?

Those are good questions.

Isn't it sad though when we are led down this road thoughtwise because of what society has become.

I agree with the OP that we should not tar everyone with the same brush therefore I am sure she will allay our worries when she next logs into the forum

At least thats what I am hoping as I have managed to find out some very interesting facts about my ancestors  :)

Hi mmbutts.I have had a look around the internet, but the only references I am finding to R I ,are as part of house, pubs or holiday villages.ie "Cuan Na Ri Holiday Village, Carrigart, Co. Donegal"

I am sure some one more knowledge able than me will soon read your post and be able to help with a better explanation.

Good Luck :)

According to their site it says :-

"The cancelled books for the 26 counties are held in Dublin in the Valuation Office while those for the 6 counties of Northern Ireland (Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry (Derry and Tyrone) are held in the PRONI in Belfast."

I'm a bit dubious about how this is going to work - is it going to include online catalogues of local archives, libraries, and other organisations, for example?

I guess it depends who opts in  :)

From what I can gather this is a collation of resources from such as Universities, free record collections AND PPV sites .

"There are a number of electronic resources that have been created by universities and by commercial providers," said Professor Robert Shoemaker from the University of Sheffield which is heading the project. "They are all available, and all separate and some require subscriptions."

I have seen some of the resources Universities have 'acquired' as I am sure a lot of others have, and the very thought that these might be available for public viewing is very exciting.

I subscribe or ppv to get my info now,but still have to do a lot of time 'trawling' through records or paying to see something that then turns out void.

Library collections prove the hardest to view as they are not online,if the libraries were to join this scheme it would be very useful for those who live abroad or out of the area they are researching.

This idea of [most ] everything being in one place is some thing I will welcome.

Tabbitha,

By rights, if he was from the Manchester area, he would probably have been with East Lancs Field Ambulance.

I had a quick look last night through the John and Jack Morris RAMC medal index cards. Unless there is a 1917 six digit service number on the MIC, it is virtually impossible to pick anyone out.

I did find one possible, but he was with West Lancs FA post-1917:

Jack Morris, Private 1427 and 341106 RAMC.

Phil

Yes indeed Phil, hence why the task has been so hard with such little info.

If only they put dates of birth on the service records it would go part way to helping.

However atm, I am going through each record I can find thats a 'possible' .Eventually I will collate and everything and try find the right one.

You have all been so kind with your ideas & suggestions and at least I have a better knowledge of what to actually aim for other than just a name. :)
Then I
