Hi
Wondering if anyone is able to date this photograph for me? It is in an old album we have which includes a mix of photos, mainly photographs of my Gt grandfather Percy Jacques and his siblings. He was born in 1890 and my Gt Grandmother Margaret was just older than him. They were both born in Shropshire before moving to Cheshire. We believe this to be her parents as the lady has a look of her. Would anyone be able to date this from their clothing? The photographers mark says T L Evans. Corve Street Ludlow. Many thanks.

Hi thanks for all your replies. I can see, now that i am a few yrs further down the line of research how easy a change in Spelling could come about. Garstonite, the George Jacques you mention as father to George jnr is the gt gt gt granddad I was refaring to in my original post !
They worked on the canals as boatmen before owning a grocers in old Chester road Nantwich.

Shropshire / Jacks family-Boatmen
« on: Tuesday 24 May 11 14:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi I have been looking for some time now for further information on the Jacks (later Jacques) family who came from Shropshire. I have my GT X4 Grandmother Ann Jacks on the 1841 census in St Marys Shropshire with my Gt x3 Grandfather George (born approx 1816 in Wem ) and some other Jacks relatives (inc William and John who I believe may be Georges older brothers). All three men are Boatmen and I know George continued this job for some time as I have been able to locate him in Chester/Nantwich on futher census records.  I have however , been unable to locate any information at all on Ann's husband William Jacks. His name appears on Georges wedding certificate to Elizabeth Price in Chester 1843 and as it does not say deceased I am guessing he was still alive at that point in time. I believe he was born in Shropshire and may have been a boatman himself. Due to being unable to find a birth certificate for George or a wedding certificate for William and Ann , i have been unable to proceed any further with this line of the family . Any ideas where i go from here? Any advice would be welcome . Swirly.

Cheshire / Official change of surname?
« on: Sunday 23 January 11 12:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi My GT GT GT Grandparents and their children changed their surname from Jacks to Jacques. They first apear as Jacques on the 1861 census in Cheshire. However , I have now found him in an 1860 directory still using Jacks so i know that the name change occured during 1860/1. I don't believe someone would change their surname spelling just because someone had spelt it wrong on the census !! Would they have had to sign anything official in order to change their name? The name Jacques is one the family continues to use today.

Hi Bertha23, Thank you for the information. Do you have any photographs of the grocer shop in your collection?
