Herts Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Henry OLDMEADOW, Bushey & Watford
« on: Thursday 10 May 12 12:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi there, I noticed your message on Rootschat regarding Henry Oldmeadow of Bushey.  I'm interested in this family as I am studying the history of Bushey and this family lived next door to the Brown family of Bushey, back in the 1800s.  I am not related, just curious.  There are a few paintings by James Charles Oldmeadow, including one of Bushey Church and I want to connect the artist with the Bushey families.  Any information would be great.

Thanks and best regards,

Lizzie

Hi Davie, thanks for your reply re sugar factories in Greenock. William and family definitely worked in one or the other.  I was lucky enough to get the census info from another Rootschatter, which is great.  They eventually left Greenock and moved to West Ham in London, where they worked at another sugar factory.  It must have been big business in it's day and it would seem every dock had sugar processing going on.  Cheers for your help.

Wow!!!! You are truly amazing.  I thought there'd be an Irish connection there somewhere.  Thanks so much.

This is my son's father's family, who are both very excited to know their ancestors were from Scotland, as I am myself, though live in London now.  By 1883, William and family had moved to Silvertown, which is in West Ham, London.  Again, they lived by the docks, working in the sugar factories in that area.  My ex-partner was born in West Ham and is delighted to know his family were east enders for a few generations but were originally from Scotland.

You've made our day!!! Thanks again and if I can help you out with any English queries, let me know.

Cheers, Lizzie ;D

Dear Elaine,

Thanks so much for your reply - and so quick!!! Saved me a lot of searching.  The information is correct and I am really pleased you took the time and bother.  I am keen to find out the parents of William senior b 1850 and know he married in 1872.  If you have the ability, could you look up 1861 and 1871 census, to find out his parent's name? If not, don't worry but again, I would be very grateful. Thanks again and look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers, Lizzie

Hi there all, can anyone look up the 1881 Scotland Census for William Downie b. 1949/50 and Janet Downie (nee) Somerville b. either 1853/4 or 1857 please? They had two children John b. 1873 and Ann b. 1874.  I think they lived in Greenock, Renfrewshire at this time.  They also moved about this time, to West Ham in London, where William worked as an engineer in a sugar refinery.  I believe Janet was born in Carnwarth in Lanarkshire.

Thanks a lot and looking forward to hearing from you all!!! ;)

Hi Phil, thanks a lot for the information re the How/Smith families.  I am a regular at  Bushey Museum and have studied a few families myself.  I know of Ian Mackay from Oxhey but have not met him yet.  Who knows, he may be one of my long lost ancestors?! I need to fill some info on this tree, to bring it up to date and then I can make the connection between the families.  It's not the easiest name to research 'Smith' but thankfully I have  people like yourself, who can save me a lot of bother.  Thanks again for that.  The other name in my research is Rand, which transmutes to Rann, Ran, Wrann, Rands among many.  They originate from the Isle of Wight (so far as I've gone back).  Eileen M Smith married Ronald Rand in Hendon in 1942.  Eileen (a lovely lady I remember) was the daughter of Alfred Smith b 1883 and Rose How (coincidentally).  Alfred Smith's father being James Smith b 1851 and Lydia How b 1846 in Bushey.  The rest I guess, is history.  I best get on with it then, before my other half begins divorce proceedings for time wasting!  I'll put you down as a guest on my Ancestry tree, so you should receive an email from me soon.  All great stuff.  My email address is lizzie_mackay at hotmail.com, should you have anything other that may be of importance to the tree.  Thanks so much again,  regards, Lizzie

Hi Phil, I have read your messages regarding the How families from Watford and Abbots Langley.  I've recently embarked on an inlaw's tree and have discovered James Smith b 1851 in Bushey, married Lydia How b 1946 Bushey and had several kids, including Alfred Smith b 1885 in Bushey.  The family remain in Bushey then move to Abbots Langley between 1881 and 91.  Alfred married Rose How in 1911, in Romford, Essex.  Curiously, both ladies are named How but I haven't made a connection there yet.  I understand Lydia How's parents were William and Jane (nee Matthews) but have no info on them so far. I'd like to know the parents of James Smith as above and wondered if any of these people figure in your family tree or have stumbled upon in your research.  I'm really quite excited as I live in Bushey and enjoy not only the family history but the social history of this unique village.  Look forward to hearing from you and good luck with your search.  Best regards, Lizzie Mackay

Thanks for your reply.  Do you have any info on any other branches of the Kocher family?  The ones I'm searching for, possibly started off in Derbyshire or Yorkshire and ended up in Battersea, Surrey area.  Thanks again.
