Durham / Re: Coxhoe Hill - quick question
« on: Saturday 04 April 20 19:27 BST (UK)  »
Judging by the way the enumerator is travelling in book 7 Joint Stocks, Pescott Hall, Coxhoe Hill, then Quarrington Hill is going to be Coxhoe Hill. The pub the cross keys appears on an old map 1856- 1865 as does the Colliery Inn. Keep in mind that Heugh Hall was / is Old Quarrington. Enumerators often made mistakes.

Theres a great little book called "Winterton Fallen Heroes" which gives some background information to life in the then Durham County Asylum during the years of WW1.
Its main focus is to remember those members of staff who gave the ultimate sacrifice during WW1 but it also gives one or two short biographies, a short list of some of those who served, had treatment in the hospital and returned home, along with some nice images.

They are available for Sedgefield Veterans Association and can be purchased for £4 from John Dale who is secretary / Chairman of the association. jdhighland@btinternet.com

Hello Wobble,I can let you know that Coxhoe is in Durham approx 11 miles north of Durham City on the A177(very close to Tony Blairs constituency)it is more of a vllage than a township.

Coxhoe is actually 4 miles South of Durham City ( Hence four mile bridge at Coxhoe which marks the Northern boundary of the village and the distance to Durham City)  11 miles north of Durham would place you on the edge of Tyne and Wear

Durham / Re: Winterton Mental Hospital 1950s/60s - any ex-employees?

My great Grandfather died in Winterton in 1924, can anyone give me a reference to Winterton in the 1911 census, as I can't seem to find it.

Paul

However census returns for the hospital tended to give initials only so your seacrh may be frustrtaing.

Perhaps your best bet would be to start topic titled Hollywood Hall / Wolsingham, Co Durham.
I would hazard an educated guess that most staff ( at that time) would live in and around the Wolsingham area, so you would be looking at places like Frosterly, Tow law, Eastgate, Westgate, Stanhope, Crook, and of course Wolsingham itself.

I would think many of them will now be of a good age.

Hollywood Hall hospital was a former sanitorium situated in Wolsingham in Weardale, Co. Durham.
Many former long stay patients from Winterton were transferred to Hollywood Hall, which closed it's doors in the 1980's. it is now an upmarket housing estate and the original main part of the building was converted into apartments.

In all likelihood the case record will have been transferred with the patient so should have survived. A great many records were destroyed in a flood at Winterton Hospital. I would assume that the County Records office will have the file, however it is likely to be closed for 100 years.
