I haven't used this chat for a while.  I don't particularly want to Diana's story for general viewing and you will see why when you read it.  So how do I make this private?  Andrea

Hi Iain.  Didn't get any further with the Irish connection, but did find McGauchies in Dumfries in the 18th centuary.  There is an Andrew McG that was a covenanter.  I hope to look into this more soon.

I would love a photo of Agnes.  Recently I had an article about Diana McGauchie or Crosby (elder sister of Agnes)  printed in the Dumfries and Galloway FHS news letter.  She had a very hard life.  I can let you have a copy of this if you are interested.

Do you live in Scotland?  I see you spell your first name the proper scottish way!

Thank you for looking.  If I find anything interesting I will post it.  It is unusual for a divorce back in those days, especially as they were catholic

Re Waldie

I am researching the McGauchie family of Dumfries.  Diana McGauchie married John Crosbie in 1874.  Sadly they were divorced, John citing Diana's adultery.  As she was also known by the name Waldie I wonder if he was 'the other party'.  She had a very sad life after her divorce, having too many children with no father. and died in 1893 in Calashiels of childbed fever.  I hope to find out more about the divorce when I visit Edinburgh in the summer.  Meanwhile does she get a mention in any of your research?

Thanks.   I use Scotlandspeople a lot and I am a member of the Dumfries and Galloway FHS.  My original message was more in the way of offering help to someone looking for McGauchies.  There are a good few in Dumfries.  There are some rather weird spellings of it though as my family were all illiterate at that time, and combined with the accent, a little lateral thinking is needed.   Andrea

Thanks for your help.  I am new to this site so a little at sea.  I have been doing family history research for many years but have only just discovered the Irish connection.  Andrea

I'm not sure if you saw the reply to this.  for some reason I was notified that it had been transferred to Down, Ireland.  I have information regarding the McGauchies going to Dumfries, Scotland.  That seems to be the main place for them and they are still there.  John McGauchie married Ann Smith. He was born in Down Ireland but married in Dumfries.  Their sons were - William b 1823, Joseph b 1825, Robert b 1836 all of whom stayed in Dumfries.  This may be of interest to you.

Hi

I am doing my family research into the McGauchie family of Dumfries.  They came from Down, Ireland before 1823.  Sons William born 1823 married to Jane McKenzie, Joseph Born 1825, Robert born 1836.  Any help?

Andrea
