Australia / REECE / AUCHTERLONIE
« on: Monday 21 January 13 14:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Justmehereok

Florence Auchterlonie married Edward Reece, who I believe are your grandparents?

Florence's father Andrew Farmer Auchterlonie is my Great-Uncle. I have a lot of information about the Auchterlonie side of the family if you are interested.

Do you want to send me a private message or reply to this post?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Northumberland / Re: Cruddas / Cruddace family from Newcastle

Hi

Thought I'd give an update to my Cruddas family. I finally found the baptisms of William's older brothers in Carlisle - they were shown as George and James Carruthers! No wonder I couldn't find them. I have read that Cruddas and the various other spellings are all derived from Carruthers, which originates in Dumfries, Scotland.

I have also found the burial record for William's mother Elizabeth Cruddas (nee Nixon) in 1859 in Newcastle, which explains why she's missing from 1861 census. The rest of the family are living in Bankside, Newcastle, as shown in an earlier posting (thanks for that one JenB). I checked all the burial records for William Cruddas after 1861, but none match up with his age on 1861 census.

I also managed to find William's grandmother Jane Savage in 1851, she was a widow and still called Nixon but visiting a Patrick Savage in Carlisle, so I'm guessing they married, hence the name change. She had grandson George age 3 with her, but no sign of his parents William and Elizabeth. I've tried every variation of spelling I can think of, including Carruthers, but can't find them anywhere.

I've really hit a brick wall now, so would be grateful if anyone has any suggestions what to try next.

Thanks a lot

Thanks for your help. I'll have to plan a visit to BL next time I'm in London.

Thanks Michael

I guessed it was to do with Northumbrian dialect. I did mean to put county not country - a case of not checking my spellings before posting!

Sounds an interesting book. I'll have to get a copy. I'm fascinated by the derivation of words.

Thanks Michael, that's really useful. Probably lots of places around the country with that name.

That's what I love about genealogy, each discovery leads to more questions!

It would have been useful if it had been Newstead as the next trace of them is in Embleton, much closer than Longbenton. I'll do a bit more digging.

Thanks for all your help.

Brilliant! Thanks for that. I didn't realise the Bishops Transcripts could be accessed from this site. I'll have to do a bit more exploring.

I'm pretty sure it does say Clattering Causey, but no additional information. If they were living in Newstead township shouldn't there be a note about Longbenton not being the parish of birth to avoid right of settlement?

Thanks for that. I can't seem to find the Bishops Transcripts from that link, it just takes me to the main Family Search page. Maybe I'm being a bit thick!

I have come across Clattering Causey on the farms index before but as this is up near Bamborough I'm not sure why, if this is where they are living, the baptism would take place in Longbenton, 35 miles away.

Hi

Would anyone be able to check an entry for a baptism at St Bartholomew's church in Longbenton please? It is for a James Latimer on 5th April 1772. Father should be William, mother Isabel.

I am particularly interested in their address or any additional information.

Thanks a lot

Chris
