Hi Dinah
I'm sure we're related. My grandfather (George) and your grandfather (Thomas) were brothers. I have replied to your personal message. I am attaching a copy of an ad from the Buchan Observer which seems to refer to your grandparents. The ad is in the Personal column
I have sent you my email address and look forward very much to sharing information with you.
I'm not sure that my reply to your personal message went through (I got an error message). If you do not get a reply please let me now and I will re-send.
Great to hear from you!
Regards,
Margaret

Hello Monica
It's been awhile since I have done any research on the Watson's. In the meantime I've been quite successful with the other family lines and have been in touch with lots of interesting "relatives". I don't think I thanked you and flst for all your help - I apologise and I'm doing that now!

I haven't got much further with my research  on Alexander. His father Thomas, the farmer, was alive at the time of his marriage. I have got a copy of the will for the Thomas Watson, farmer, we talked about. There is no reference to his son Alexander although there are bequests to his other children. If this Alexander died I can't find a reference to it. Perhaps he was estranged from his father. Perhaps he was doing OK in England and so was left nothing.

I did consider contacting the Buchan Observer again but they have been less than helpful to me. I could never find out if my letter reached the person who was making the enquiries. It seems bizarre to me that someone would go to the trouble of placing a very specific item in the classifieds of a newspaper but do not seem to be on any ancestry site doing research.

Hope you are having a great summer and once again thanks for your help.
Regards,
Margaret

Hi Monica, I've got the wedding certificate which shows that Alexander's father was indeed Thomas, occupation Farmer. Unfortunately it still doesn't give his place of birth in Scotland.  I have attached the classified ad from the Buchanan newspaper in case anyone has any ideas or leads as to who placed the ad. I think I will get his death certificate and perhaps that will give his actual place of birth.

Thanks for your help.
Regards,
Margaret

I looked him up in the censuses  ;)

Ordering the marriage is cert. is the only way really to make sure you are following through the right line. There are a number of Alexander Watson's born in his age range in Aberdeenshire.  There is one main family from Logie Buchan I saw which is a possibility for him, father Thomas and mother Catherine, with some sons that I think (!) I can see in London in later years.

Let us know once you have the details from the marriage cert.

Monica  :)

I'm not sure who posted the reply re Anderson Strachan, but thanks! I'm still investigating the Strachan connection - it's a long shot but the Strachan name comes up as a middle name for my Watson ancestors so possibly there was a female Strachan who married a Watson. I'll let you know if I find a conection.

Margaret

Hi Monica, thanks for your reply. I had considered getting the marriage cert. but hadn't got around to it! I have just ordered it online and maybe I will have more information to go on. I wish he had at least once put where he was from in Scotland on one of the many censuses I have found him in!
How did you know about the marriage to Letitia?
Thanks again.
Margaret

I'm looking for my gg grandfather Alexander Watson born 1830 possibly in or around Lonmay or Peterhead. He may have had a Strachan in his family. Have you have come across any Watson in your research into the Strachan? A bit of a long shot but....
Thanks very much.
Margaret

What are your Strachan interests (assuming you mean the surname and not the placename)?
My Strachan connections are in Lonmay, St. Fergus, Peterhead and Strichen. My greatx5 grandfather was an Anderson Strachan b. St Fergus 1799, d. Peterhead 1876.

Any connection?

I.m looking for information on my great grandfather Alexander Watson possibly born in or around Peterhead in 1830. May have Strachan in family somewhere.

He moved to England and lived in Hackney and died in 1904. I cannot find any leads although I had a promising one when I found an ad placed in the Buchan Observer looking for ancestors of a Tom Watson who moved to London and started (or worked for) an envelope manufacturing company in Swan Lane. My great grandfather had such a company in the same location.

I would be grateful for any help. I'm in Canada so it's difficult to do any research in person.

Thanks!
Margaret
