Dumfriesshire / Firparknook, Kirtlebridge
« on: Tuesday 20 February 18 14:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

My ancestors lived at a place called "Firparknook" between 1829 and 1834
I have attached an old map showing Firparknook.
What I would like to know is what Parish does Kirtlebridge belong to for the above years?
On a modern day map Firparknook is no longer there?
Any information or photos would greatly appreciated.

Regards

Ayrshire / Muirkirk - James Donaghy, poet 1882-1947
« on: Monday 28 August 17 17:52 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

"Toddlin' doon the brae"

Is a wonderful poem by James Donaghy (1882-1947) born in Auchinleck and lived in Muirkirk.

TODDLIN’ DOON THE BRAE

Yestreen a puir auld beggar man
  Cam toddlin’ doon the brae,
His feet were sair, his face was wan,
  His shaggy beard was grey.
Some whaips o’ boys were playin’ there,
Wha’d nae mair sense than kye,
Foe sneers and jeers they didna spare
  As he gaed hirplin’ by.

The puir auld man had heard their crack,
  An’, slowly turnin’ roon’,
  Tae that hauf-glaikit, senseless pack
He read a lecture soun’;
‘Oh boys,’ he said, ‘I’m way tae see
  Ye stop yer hairmless play
Tae rile a puir auld man like me
  Wha’s toddlin’ doon the brae.’

‘This life,’ said he ‘is yae lang brae
We a’ maun toddle doon;’ wee,
Ha’e a’ their pairts tae play,
An’ you, my boys, are just like me,
  Ye’re toddlin’ doon the brae.’

‘The sky sae blue that smiles on you
Yince looked as fair on me,
An’ visions bright that meet yer view,
  I yince masel’ could see.
Ye’re on the road that I ha’e trod
  This mony a lang, lang day;
Tho’ braid’s yer back an’’ licht yer load,
 Ye’re toddlin’ doon the brae.

‘The road, I’m share, tae you looks fair,
  But oh, ye little ken
There’s kittle places here an’ there
That try the best o’ men.
So when ye meet wi’ yin like me
  Wha’s feeble, auld and grey,
Jist whisper tae yersel, that he
  Is toddlin’ doon the brae.’

‘I hope ye’ll no, be angry noo,
  If I’ve been kind o’ snell;
God grant your troubles may be few,
  For I’ve had lots masel.’
Then, as the boys gaed ower the stile
  I heard the wanderer say,
‘May fortune smile on you the while
  Ye’re toddlin’ doon the brae.’

Weel cowed, they a’ gaed slinkin’ hame,
An’ pleased was I tae see
On every face a look o’ shame,
  A tear in every e’e.
Then, turnin’ slowly roon’ again,
The auld man went his way,
An’, limpin’ on through wind an’ rain,
  Gaed toddle’ doon the brae.

"Toddlin' doon the brae" by James Donaghy is so funny - but sadly true of life!

Charles

Hello Lurana, wow, what a surprise! my original post was back in 2011
My great grandfather Charles Paterson Bell (1862-1937) would have known your great grandfather James Donaghy! Charles was a school teacher in Muirkirk.
My grandfather, father, and I all come from Muirkirk, I live in Leeds, Yorkshire.
I have great Passion for my Roots of Muirkirk, especially social history and Poems, they give a wonderful insight into every day life.

"Toddlin' doon the brae" poem by James Donaghy is so funny - but sadly true of life!

It would be absolutely wonderful if, perhaps you could share your great grandfathers poems.

I have more information of your great grandfather James, but unfortunately I cant seem to attach photos taken from a book that I have. I know how to send attachments by email.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards
Charles

Hello everybody,

Thanks to all for the great contributions, now that I have established where "Thorniwhat" is I would like to keep this thread going.

You will all notice that I have re-named the Subject line from "Thorniwhat ? in Lochmaben" to "Bell / Taggart - Thorniethwaite, Lochmaben"

For many years now, I have hit many "Bell" brick walls for my g, g, g, grandfather Walter Bell (Annan), spouse Margaret Aitkin (Hutton and Corrie/Kirkpatrick-Fleming).

So, this search interest is a new and fresh outlook for another possible link to my "Bell" ancestors ::)

The facts for this new possibility are as such -

Lochmaben OPR film in the Ewart Library.

William Bell 23rd November 1788 son to James Bell and Jannet Tagart spouse in Thorniwhat

John Bell 5th July 1792 son to James Bell and Jannet Tagart spouse in Thorniwhat

I6  In memory of Jane Taggart spouse to James Bell, Bonshawside who died 22nd March 1813 aged 47 years. Also the said James Bell who died at Firparknook 1st January 1834 aged 71 years. Also Margaret Bell their daughter who died in Firparknook 17th March 1829 aged -0 years. And David Bell son of William Bell --- in Roseiries who died 26th July 183-? ---- Stone badly flaked.

Any more help for this Bell family would be greatly appreciated.
