Other Countries / Re: Bermuda Birth - Hamilton (Robert Franklin ?)
« on: Saturday 02 February 13 11:31 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you Dawn M,

To be honest I'm starting to become rather sceptical that his name was even Wainwright and am leaning toward the idea that that was his profession, making the surnames Franklin or Jones more likely.

As far as I am aware and given that he was black I would assume that his family went far back in Bermuda, but as for writing a will I couldn't say.

From records here though I think he's definitely from Hamilton the city in Pembroke rather than the Parish. Potentially therefore anywhere in Pembroke could have his birth.

Thanks for the tip,

Sadly however I think it's one of those mysteries that may never be solved

Thanks for the reply Fairyoevil, much appreciated after all this time.

As said in the post the names I've gone on are:

Robert Franklin Wainwright (as told by living relatives)
Robert Franklin Jones (as appears on Welsh Records)
and
Robert Franklin (an outside chance if Wainwright was his occupation not his name and there had been some confusion).

I know from his marriage and death that his birth points to a date in 1876, however the day and month have never been found.

The only clues I have to his time in Bermuda is the census, stating his birth to be in the town of Hamilton, not that parish. His marriage stating his father's name as Robert with the Stone Cutter profession and the fact that he called his only child Jessie, a name which appears nowhere else in his wife's family and may have a connection to him.

Any further help/advice would be appreciated as this is a mystery that interests a lot of people yet sadly I know least about

World War One / Re: Missing Service Record

Thanks for the replies,

Unfortunately I dont have a photograph of him in Uniform so I cannot see a cap badge or any other insignia.

I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that there is no surviving record, but I will consider contacting both regiments direct to see if either of them have any further information.

World War One / Missing Service Record
« on: Wednesday 09 November 11 23:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I recently started looking into the Military shades of my family tree, however even though I have been at the main records for a long time, the military ones are proving a bit more illusive.

My ancestor, Thomas George Callow was born in 1893 in Banbury, Oxfordshire. He served in World War I.

I have a Medal Card on Ancestry that seems to fit for a Thomas Callow, Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry (24531) and South Wales Borderers (40780) though the latter is a bit of a mystery.

However I cannot find a Pension record, or more importantly a Service record for him at all.

I was wondering if maybe I was missing something as I know spellings are sometimes different, people lied about ages etc, or if i'm just one of those unlucky people who's record is lost.

I would be grateful for any advice anyone has on how to proceed...

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / 1840's Moulton Family Birth - Slad/West Dean
« on: Friday 10 June 11 19:15 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am looking for information on a Moulton Family who lived in the West Dean area of Gloucestershire in the early to mid 1800's.

I have them on the Census' in Ross in 1841, and West Dean (Pillowell) in 1851 & 1861. The parents names are William and Sarah.

The problem is that one member I am looking for seems to be missing a Birth record, despite siblings having corresponding ones in West Dean or Monmouth and all of them appearing together on Census returns.
There is no evidence of exceptionally older siblings so I dont think an illegitimacy is a possibility here, equally so she is a middle child.

Her name is Esther Moulton, born abt 1844 in Slad (according to all later census'). I know she eventually married John Townsend in Westbury-on-Severn in 1867 and died in Pontypridd in 1916. All information corresponds with the 1844 Birth, just no record.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

Somerset / Re: Samuel Cane (early 1800's)

Thanks for the replies.

I agree that the Servant Emily Cane is probably the same woman, pre-marriage. So thanks for that suggestion. I didnt want to include it in the initial post incase someone got sidetracked by it.

As for the spelling variation, I hadnt considered that there would be so many variations of Cain or Cane, though I am also inclined to believe that the Cann spelling is correct at this time given that Samuel (whoever and wherever he may be) was a Miner.

I cant find a baptism for that birth record unlike the London one so I think I may have to eventually order a copy in order to break this mystery, or deepen it....

Thanks for that,
I admit i'm not 100% which census you're referring to with Laura E Callow/Tebby, but I have come to the conclusion that Annie Kemsley and Annie/Hannah Callow are in fact sisters from the Tebby family and daughters of William.
I also believe that Agnes is in fact Oliver Gibbs' daughter and that for whatever reason him and Hannah separated. I do not believe there was ever a marriage between Hannah and James Callow for that reason, however given his age I havent ruled out the possibility that he may also have been married before. At present however, this mystery remains unsolved.

Somerset / Samuel CANE (early 1800's)
« on: Tuesday 26 April 11 18:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

For about 2 years now I have been stuck on an ancestor of mine called Samuel Cane (I believe).

I have lots of information on his daughter, Emily Ann Cane (1856) who claimed to have been born in Bath on all census'. However no record exists for her in Bath that I can tell (though there is one in London for a different person) and the closest I have is for an Emily Ann Cann in Taunton which I believe could be correct.

However when Emily got married in 1874 in Pontypridd she stated her father as Samuel Cane, occupation Miner.

I cannot find any record of them together in either the 1861 or 1871 census in either England or Wales and am running out of ideas. Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Thanks in advance,

Lucas
