Durham / Anyone researching Philipsons of weardale
« on: Sunday 02 November 08 10:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there
like most of the subscribers to this site I have hit a solid brick wall due to female ancestors marrying and remarrying without leaving a trail . I have discovered that it was also common for ladies to amend their ages from time to time to 'fit in' with their new spouse which makes it even harder to track them, especially if their original name was common for the area, in my case Jane Philipson.  Jane was my  great grandmother but she never married my grandfatehrs father. They had two children out of wedlock which for the 19c I would have thought was unusual - beginning to think that g,grandfather must have been married to some one else but again can not prove it because I don't know his first name!!! I do know he was an Armstrong because my garandfather was given his name and lived with his grandparents whereas his sister was given her mothers name and lived with her mothers parents - where Jane went to is a mystery.  Its a longshot but if anyone else out there is researching Philipsons they may hold the key. Here are the details I know. Jane Philipson b 1870, to Ralph and Elizabeth (nee Hodgson) at East Black Dene, weardale. Shown on 1891 census as Seamstress, not found on 1901 census. No death record found either so I presume she married but none of the available certificates match up. Could she have eloped, how would I find those records? My grandfather was b 1896 and his sister Elizabeth Grace was born 1895 ( cant find her after 1930 either!!
Any help much appreciated.

South Africa / Armstrong - Accidental death on Vaal river- look up
« on: Sunday 02 November 08 10:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
My grandfatherwas told from a very young age that his father was accidentally killed in South Africa during the 2nd Anglo/Boer war in or around 1901. However, we never new his fathers name and there is no one else to ask now. By a process of elimination we have narrowed it down to two possibilities. Thomas William Armstrong b 1870 and John Armstrong b1862,both from Weardale, County Durham. None of the Armstrong's from Durham serving in the northern regiments (Imperial Yeomanry, Durham volunteer service etc) match up with names or dates and all seem to have made it back to blighty. HOWEVER, I have recently come across a report of the accidental death of a private J. Armstrong (Durham volunteer service company) 6th Dec 1900 on the Vaal river - killed by a train. These are the only details I have but they seem to fit with my grandfatehrs memory of events and now I am wondering if there is any way of getting any more information. Would local papers have carried more of a story? Any help or advice will be much appreciated.

Hello KathMc and Shellyesq
many, many thanks for your helpful suggestions and all the information you have uncovered, and so quickly!!.It certainly looks like the right family, Gordon's birthday was definitely early 1885 ( I actually don't know the exact date, just the quarter) I will follow up on the Obits and libraries ASAP. Incidentally you've solved another mystery - one of the last postcards we received was addressed as Fremont but Gordon's copperplate handwriting made it look like 'Friesmont', no wonder I couldn't find it on Google!!!
thanks again

US Completed Requests / Family of Gordon Armstrong Michigan Look up
« on: Saturday 25 October 08 10:44 BST (UK)  »
hi every one
I have traced the emigrating of my great uncle Gordon Armstrong to Drayton, Newaygo, Michigan as far as I can. He left Weardale in England in Dec 1906 on the Majestic. Thereafter he found work on the farm of William and Leida Parker who themselves were originally from England and had moved to Michigan via Canada. In the 1920 census it appears that Gordon had married the parkers daughter Waltha ( also spelled Weltha) and had taken over the farm.  By 1930 they had 3 children, Irene, Jean and Bonnie.  After that time my grandfather lost touch with Gordon but it is possible that local records might reveal descendants that I might contact, not to make a nuisance of myself but just to complete the story. Any ideas where to start?
thanks
Yvonne

Durham Completed Look up Requests / Completed Durham directory look up request
« on: Tuesday 14 October 08 10:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi
if anyone out there regularly visits the Durham records office could could they possibly look up a 1901 copy of the "Durham directory" within which there is a report of the accidental death of Private John Armstrong in South Africa 6th December 1900. A story similar to this has been in my family for 3 generations but I have yet to find my John Armstrong. I am assuming that the obit will give some family history and that maybe this will prove to be my ancestor.
Heres hoping
