Durham / Re: How do I find out if my Gr Great grandfather was in Durham Jail?
« on: Thursday 19 July 12 12:42 BST (UK)  »
If the full sentence was served this would take him up to 14 October 1881.

My family lived in the area of Spring Garden Lane at the time and they seem to have a different address on every document I've looked at so families did move around a lot in that area, with guest houses and rooms rented out from houses.

There's a few Thomas Caseys in Sunderland at the time, so with a check on the census forms for all of them you should be able to eliminate the some of them, though this is only circumstancial evidence.

Check the 1881 census original for this Garthwaite family. The people living next door (or next faily entry) - do these have the same surname as your individual of interest ??? Coincidence maybe ? Or maybe not ?

For a bit of lateral thinking, was the individual visiting the Garthwaite family or perhaps someone else who was boarding with them ?

The general approach for this type of thing I think it to build up the family trees for both the family and individual concerned and look for common names linking them eg maiden names etc

A bit more specific info on the individual would be helpful and I've no doubt a lot of people on here would see it as a challenge and would be only too pleased to do some looking up !

You can try wading through this lot ..... there may not be photos of Robinson Lane itself but there's lots of the nearby area.

Bob,

You don't mention what period you are looking at here. What years are interested in ?

Bob,

I have been through such a search for a grave in Sunderland myself, and the graves are not easy to locate on your own, even if the reference number is known. Especially if there is no gravestone.

There is, however, an excellent "cemetery hotline" service available, and they located the grave and marked the location, and we arranged to meet at the cemetery where they showed my the grave. Excellent service !

The number is (UK number) Cemeteries Office on tel : (0191) 553 1687 where the staff will be pleased to assist you. This is probably your best bet for a result by speaking to them direct.

Best of luck with it all.

Durham / Re: Annison

Frank,

There are lots of branches of the Annison family in Sunderland.

My great-great grandmother was Hannah Annison (1830-1874).  Hannah Annison married Harrison Coundon in 1852.

Her parents and siblings as far as I can make out were :

MATTHEW ANNISON (1803 - 1874) married HANNAH WATSON (c1805 - 1893?)

RICHARD (b. 1827)
HANNAH (see above)
JOHN 1832
MARY 1835
ELIZABETH  (b. 1841)
ANN   (b. 1845)
KIRKELL 1847
MICHAEL  (b. 1849)
GEORGE (b. 1853)

The census records have lots of them, so there's no shortage of info for you to work with!
