World War One / Am I doing something wrong?!
« on: Monday 08 November 10 21:30 GMT (UK)  »
I am searching through the WW1 records on Ancestry.co.uk trying to find our more about my Great Great Grandfather Frederick George Latimer. I have found a record of his death in service at the Battle of Delville wood between 16th and 19th August 1916. I know he was a lance corporal with the 10th battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. I have found his death record and his roll of honour, but I cannot find his service record??!! ???
Am I just one of the unlucky ones whose ancestors records have been lost, or am I looking in the wrong place?
Any help would be gratefully received! ;D

Family History Beginners Board / Taking the research further
« on: Saturday 06 February 10 21:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,

I have managed to trace my ancestors back to the early 1800s and build a good idea of where they lived and what their occupations were from the census information. But in order to really get an insight into who my ancestors were I need some pointers on how to take my research a little further.

For example, my parents and grandparents have told me some of the family stories, such as my great grandmother who blew herself up in a gas explosion in Plymouth in the 1950s, my great grandfather who married bigamously and yet another great grandfather who returned from the war to finr my g grandmother shacked up with another man and so emigrated to Canada! I'd dearly love to verify some of the facts within these stories and find some contemporary records verifying their truth or even just an insight into the social history relevant to my ancestors.

I'm feeling rather daunted and would love some advice to help me build a bigger picture, rather than just names and dates on a family tree.

Many Thanks in advance

Whilst researching my great grandmother's line of the family I have found some confusing records, which I hope someone will be able to help with. I have my grandmother's birth certificate which shows her mother to be Ivy Lily Colmer formerly Glanville. I have found the birth record for Ivy L Glanville to be 1915 in Plymouth Devon (which is where the family is still based so this stacks up perfectly). The mother's maiden name according to the birth record is Drake. So I spent hours searching for the marriage between Drake and Glanville and came up with nothing at all. The only possible match I have found is a marriage between John Albert Drake and Louisa Glanville in 1892 in East Stonehouse Devon. Could this be the right record, or am I barking up the wrong tree. If it is the right marriage can anyone suggest a reason why the records would show the child to have taken the mother's maiden name and the father's name to be listed as the maiden name?

Any help would be very greatly appreciated!

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Birth Certificate Query
« on: Tuesday 22 September 09 10:05 BST (UK)  »

Hello,

Thanks to all for their help. I have searched for other deaths between 1860 and 1871 and I could not find any other Joseph Golledges. Strangely, the informant on the death certificate it Joseph's mother?

Many Thanks to all

Family History Beginners Board / Birth Certificate Query
« on: Monday 21 September 09 22:43 BST (UK)  »
I may have the wrong person, but if someone could advise I would be very grateful!!

I think I have tracked down the death certificate of my ancestor but I am not sure. The death certificate shows that Joseph Golledge died in November 1864. I have the birth certificate for his son (also Joseph Golledge) who was born in June 1865. Clearly it is perfectly plausable that he was born after his father's death, but my question is would it be noted on the birth certificate that the father was deceased at the time of birth? Under father is says 'Joseph Golledge' and under occupation of father is says 'Farm Labourer'.

Just in case it helps, on Joseph Golledge seniors death certificate it also says that his occupation was 'Farm Labourer' and both events were registered in Evercreech, Somerset. I also have Joseph Golledge Jnr's mother's death certificate (dated 1888), which shows her occupation as 'Widow of Joseph Golledge a Labourer'. I also can see Joseph Golledge Jnr and his mother Caroline Golledge in the 1871 census as being in the Shepton Mallet workhouse, with his mother listed as a widow.

I would be very grateful for any help!

Many Thanks

Sarah
