Wiltshire / Re: Wilton - non conformist chapels

Hi Brionne, Colin and Fiona,

Thanks very much for all your replies re my enquiry. Sorry for the late reply.

I travelled to Wilton today and found Dorcas's gravestone in St Mary's churchyard buried alongside her husband James Bennett. She was his 2nd wife. Interestingly his 3rd wife was also buried under the same headstone as well !

Still no luck with her baptism record. I checked the Baptist Church off Wilton square but it was closed.
I know for certain that she wasn't baptised at St Marys.
I plan to take your advice and travel to Chippenham and see what records I can find there.

You have given me a few avenues to follow, so many thanks for your help !!!

BTW James Morris was Dorcas's first husband. I did know about him. Unfortunately her and his death records do not help with the religious aspect.

Once again thanks for your help and advice,

Glen

Wiltshire / Wilton - non conformist chapels
« on: Wednesday 17 September 08 19:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I have hit the proverbial brick wall.

I am not having much luck trying to find the baptism records of my earliest ancestor -
DORCAS FORD.
She was born in Wilton circa 1809 to a JOHN FORD, carpet weaver..
I have tried St Mary's Parish records with no luck.

My only hope is that she was a non-conformist.
Does anyone know what the non-conformist chapels were in Wilton?

I may have to try and get in touch with them direct to see where the records are if they are not at the Wiltshire RC.

many thanks,

Glen

Hi All,

Just an added thought - Would all births/christenings be recorded as a matter of course?

I mean, if there is no record of a baptism at St Mary's in Wilton, are there other places in Wilton I can I look ???

Also, in later life, Dorcas FORD was shown as a pauper/washerwoman - so i do not know whether that would have any relevance as to where her baptism entry may have been recorded.

Sorry, am clutching at straws a bit as I cannot go back any further on the FORD line until I can find a record for her !

yours in desperation,

Glen

Hi All,

I am new to this message board so hopefully i am doing things right !!!!
I have hit the proverbial brick wall in my family tree research and need some help if possible.

My GG Grandfather James Bennett Ford was born illegitimately to DORCAS FORD circa 1829.

Dorcas Ford  married a James Morris firstly in 1831 and then a James Bennett in 1855. I am almost certain that James Bennett was James Bennett Ford's natural father.

Now according to census records for 1841 and 1851 DORCAS was born in WILTON circa 1809 (give or take a year).
Her 2nd marriage certificate states her father to be a carpet weaver - JOHN FORD

My problem lies in that i cannot find any record anywhere of the baptism/birth of DORCAS FORD.

Could some kind soul have a look at the Parish records for me please ???

I do believe that carpet weavers at that time may have been non conformists, but to be honest i have no idea where to look for that angle either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated !

best regards
