Berwickshire / Re: James Guthrie of Allanton, 1789-1843
« on: Thursday 25 April 13 10:22 BST (UK)  »
I've been doing some research about the people in Allanton for an exhibition next year. James Guthrie born to Ralph Gotherie [spelling was a very loose affair] in Allanton. Ralph had married Elizabeth Dickson in Hutton 26/5/1784. I found 7 children - John 1785, Jean 1787, James 1789, Ralph 1792, Hanah 1794, Joseph 1798, Ebenezer 1800. Hope this helps if you have not already found the info.

Here are the entries in the Buncle and Preston book for baptisms.

1684, November 20th. John Sligh and Margaret Bartrim in Preston, had their son, Adam, baptised at Preston.

1687, 27 Jan Christopher Sligh and Marjory Robertson in Preston, had their daughter, Marion, baptised at Preston.

1687, 14 April. John Sligh and Margarit Bartrim in Preston, had their son, Alexander, baptised at Preston.

1687, Nov 11. George Sligh and Elspet Darling in Primrosehill, had their daughter, Elspeth, baptised at Preston.

There is one marriage June 1st 1690. John Sligh and Alison Renton, both in this parish, being three severall times proclaimed, and having consigned their pledges, were married.

There are MI's in Preston churchyard - do you have these - they are all later than the above entries and I don't know how they connect.

There is no mention in the book except the Mi which is already in the Cargill pre 1855 inscriptions. If you don't have these I can post them.

There is no mention of Blackadder in the book - they would have been in Edrom or Chirnside at the time. Here is the only info that I've been able to extract:

Bunkle inscriptions - Here lyes the body of John Aitken, indueller [ indweller] in Lintlau [Lintlaw], who died the 18 of June 1776, aged 63 years.
[on the other side] Also the body of John Aitken, son to John Aitken, wright in Ovenden, who died the 9 of October 1775.

There is no other mention of Aitken - they do no appear in the Session record, marriage or baptisms.

I have a copy of the Session book of Bunkle & Preston Parish for the above dates. It includes MI's as well as marriages and baptisms. I would be willing to do look ups. Please include as much info as you have.

There is the parish church graveyard as well. Even if there is no headstone the civic cemetary on the outskirts of Duns would have a lair register held by the Borders Council which lists all burials.

Hi Martin

The Guthries were in Allanton and as well as being joiners they were also undertakers. They would have been buried in Edrom or Hutton. In Hutton I found an inscription - By George Guthrie, Allanton children: Thomas 23.5.1838 9yrs. Ralph 28.9.38 1yr. Isabella 28.4.--- 8yrs. George Guthrie 9.12.1851 56yrs. wife Elizabeth Struthers 23.8.55 52yrs. son George 21.2.1857 20yrs.

Another stone there has Joseph Guthrie, merchant Allanton 9.9.1852 53yrs.

the 1837 Directory has Joseph Guthrie of Allanton - grocer and George Guthrie, tailor. Allanton was noted for having lots of tailors. In Duns there was a George Guthrie a cabinet maker.

Hope this helps and doesn't just cloud the issue. Good searching.
