Hiya CCRAIL and Penny,
Thank you very much for your recent responses to my Pickett/Piggott post - it is very kind.
It is also kind of you to offer to help further. I live abroad - trying to earn a crust when you get older and you have to keep the family home going and the kids in education means you have to go where anyone will pay you!! It also means I cannot get to record centres, graveyards and the like! Anyway, I will go through what I have and if you have any thoughts, you will have my undying gratitude. Most of my research in this area has come from the old LDS site and I have not seen any of the original records in Surrey. It may be that there will be further clues there (such as birth dates, people to explain dubious links, etc.).
I had been able to find the parish record for the William Collins - Jane Pickett marriage and, like Penny, could not read the witness names although I do not think, in this case, that they would provide any other clues.
From the LDS site, I had found a baptism for Jane Piggott 14/3/1813 in Haslemere to parents John and Jane Piggott which looks pretty good to me.
From LDS, I have a list of probable siblings for my Jane, all in Haslemere to parents John & Jane.
John bpt 30/5/1802
Harriott bpt 14/10/1804
Sarah bpt 24/9/1809
James bpt 5/11/1820
William bpt 17/6/1827
I do not have birth dates for any of these except for Sarah b 10/9/1809. The implication of this is that John & Jane probably baptised their children soon after birth. The gap between Sarah & James is is obviously suspicious and it may be that these in fact had different parents.
LDS shows a John Piggott married Jane Ellis 1/2/1798 in Haslemere and again, this looks pretty good to me.
I am struggling to guess the birth/baptism details of John Piggott/Pickett. There is a John Pickett baptised 13/3/1785 in Haslemere to parents John & Ann. Unless this was an adult baptism, then for this to be the same John who married Jane Ellis, then he must have married very young! Hmm....not impossible.
There is also a John Pickett baptised 11/1/1763 in Chiddingfold, father Abraham. However, if he was the John who married Jane Ellis then he would have around twice her age! Hmm.....also not impossible.
One possible construction is that the 1785 John was in fact born several years earlier and that the 1763 John is his father.
In 1841, in Chiddingfold, there was a John Pickett age 80 with a housekeeper Elizabeth Pickett age 58 (perhaps this was Jane?), and also a John Pickett age 56. Neither entry gives any further clues! I could not find Jane.
I could not find a marriage between a John Pickett & Ann, presumably 1780-5.
The older John Pickett was buried in Chiddingfold 1/4/1849 age 86. Jane Piggott was buried in Chiddingfold 21/1/1856 age 72. She is shown as a widow in 1851.
Unless there is an alternative scenario, then it would appear that all routes lead to Abraham Pickett. Abaraham Piggot was baptised 30/1/1717 in Chiddingfold to father Abraham, and married Elizabeth Matthew 13/7/1755 in Chiddingfold. I did note that Abaraham, who had at least two siblings, & Elizabeth had at least 7 children and that one of them, another Abraham, had around 9!
I suspect that Jane Ellis was the one baptised 20/8/1780 in Chiddingfold to parents Thomas & Jane. Thomas Ellis seems to have married a Jane Winson 1/11/1778 in Chiddingfold. There is a baptism for a Thomas Ellis 8/11/1759 in Hambledon to James & Mary Ellis. There is a baptism for a Jane Winson 25/1/1759 in Chiddingfold father William. William is probably the one who married Sarah Horsely 7/11/1758.
Overall, it looks as if anyone around before 1800 in the Chiddingfold/Haslemere (possibly also Hambledon) areas named Pickett, Piggott, Ellis, Winson, Horsely and Matthew are likely to be of substantial interest to me. Obviously my main interest is to try to be sure that my construction is reasonable and, if so, to push further back beyond Abraham Pickett, Elizabeth Matthew, James & Thomas Ellis, William Winson & Sarah Horsely.
So, if you are passing by any local records, I hope you will be able to jot down any snippets that may be of interest to me. Thank you very much.
Regards
Mick
