Hi again

Glad you found that other map which showed you the locations of the various properties. Google maps is not always easy to zoom in on the correct one as you can see - it usually takes you pretty close but not necessarily the correct property. However, if you go back onto the map as before and locate that red letter "A" - then look slightly westward of the indicated property along the A944 you will see a minor road leading off the main carriageway. At this point you will see a single property on the southern side of the main carriageway (Six Mile House) and a few properties on the northern side on the main carriageway. If you drag the wee orange man onto the map at that point you will be able to see both Six Mile House and Crommie Cottage on opposite sides of the road.

They are two different properties - postcode AB15 8SP covers several properties all located close by each other, by the Six Mile Fork. Unfortunately some online maps only indicate one particular property of any given postcode - have noticed this happen on more than one occasion.

Census 1841

Piece: SCT1841/829 Place: Hoddam -Dumfries-shire Enumeration District: 1
Civil Parish: Hoddam Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 1 Page: 13
Address: Ecclefechan

RAE   Jane   F   60   Grocer    Dumfries-shire
RAE   Jack   F   55       Dumfries-shire
MANIFOLD   Richard   M   20   Rural Police Constable    Ireland

Have viewed this on SP and clearly reads Jack Rae - female. Given rounding of ages in 1841 census this Jack would be approx 55 - 60 and could well have had a son born circa 1801.

Hi Tracey

A few questions.
What date was William's marriage in 1901?
What was his address at time of marriage - and his occupation ?
What was Joan's maiden name and her father's name - and her address and occupation ?
What were the names of the witnesses ?

Have you seen William's death certificate - and if so what what details were given for his parents names or occupations ?

Hi Lynda

Have you had a look at the birth of William Bremner Ross in Aberdeen in August 1872. He was born to an Isabella Ross. This would tie in with his age shown on the census of 1881 and 1901.

Hi Denise

Have you managed to see the certificate and see if it ties up with what you already know ? That was one of 2 possibles I saw on the SP indexes.

The other was  Helen Bruce or Rose also with mother's maiden name Forbes, dying in Arbroath in 1980 aged 75.

Looks like you may be getting somewhere with this now.

Hi Denise

I have figured out your grandmother's birth but not as yet her death.

You know her age was 29 in 1933 and her name was Helen Bruce, formerly Forbes. This implies that she was known at that time as Helen Bruce but had been known previously as Forbes. No reference being made to her maiden name - suggests it's possible she had not been married but had simply changed her name for some other reason during her lifetime.

You also know there is a marriage between a Helen Forbes and a John Charles Bruce in 1904  - although this Helen is around 17/18 years older then your Helen.

BUT - what if the elder Helen is the mother of the younger Helen ??? Agewise it fits and may explain why the younger Helen's name had changed from Forbes to Bruce.

We know from the census in 1891 where the elder Helen's family are staying, and checking the 1901 census finds Helen a domestic servant at a farm in Kinellar and her family staying at Clintery Cottages, Newhills. Checking the marriage of Helen Forbes and John Bruce - we see that Helen's address in December 1904 is Clintery Cottages, Newhills also.

So now we need to see if there is a birth for a Helen Forbes prior to that marriage - which there is on 13th January 1904 - also at Clintery Cottages. Her birth is shown as illegitimate and there is no RCE naming her father. So either John Bruce was her father and her parents married almost a year after her birth or John Bruce was her step-father and she took his name.

The death of Helen Forbes/Bruce which you have in 1975 - what are her parents names from the death certificate  - and was she married to John Charles Bruce ?

Regards

Susan.
