I realise this is an old post, but for posterity...
The Castle (Hendies) in Shotton is not the same pub as the Hawarden Castle in Queensferry. Both were built by the Castle Hill Brewery, and are a mile or so apart.
The Hawarden Castle is at the south end of the 'Blue Bridge', on the south bank of the Dee. It closed in the late 1980s/ early 90s, and is now semi-derelict.
At the opposite end of the bridge is the Ferry Hotel. Both establishments pre-date the construction of a permanent crossing, and travellers could stay overnight and wait for the next ferry.
There is a lane called Foxes Drive, which runs along the north bank of the river, only a couple of hundred yards away. This ends at a farm, although I'm not sure of its name.
I would expect the Fox family to be involved with both.
